Today Can Be Different

How does God want to use you – today? Sheryl Boldt

What would you imagine Jesus saying if you asked Him, “What is Your plan for me, Lord?”

We can easily rattle off a dozen spiritual answers. We could even quote His words, right from the Bible: “Make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19) or “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12).

But what if we added one more word to the question: “What is Your plan for me – today?”

Not someday. Not after life settles down. Today, as in the circumstances you’re living in right now.

Without neglecting His commands, consider how Jesus might answer each of us in our present roles: as a parent, spouse, employee, student or retiree. What might He say to you right where you are – perhaps even in the middle of what you’re doing at this very moment?

We may hesitate to ask God, fearing He’ll send us to a foreign land or ask us to give away everything we own. Or if you’re disabled, struggling in school, recently laid off, or grieving a failed business venture, you might be convinced God can’t – or won’t – use you. Or, you may be experiencing professional success yet still wonder why you lack a sense of purpose.

Perhaps the better question isn’t “What am I supposed to be doing?” but “Who am I living for?” When we live to please God in every area of our lives, it changes our perspective. Asking God for direction, both in our failures and in our achievements, will protect us from making decisions we might later regret. This mindset could be our starting point in hearing God’s will (His next step) for us today. Right now.

Proverbs 16:9 (ESV) says, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” How would it change us – and our relationship with God – if we truly believed our heavenly Father’s promise to direct our steps?

God loves you and has a purpose for your life. In fact, Almighty, sovereign God has a plan for you … today.

When we keep our eyes focused on God and His Word – and train our ears to listen to His counsel – we are changed by the power of His Spirit. When we yield to His counsel, He faithfully directs each necessary step. We grow in our purpose and find meaning in each day.

As we continue to pursue Him and strive to totally submit our lives to His will, we’ll often discover that God is already at work today, right where we are — at this very moment.
