National Signing Day celebration held at Gadsden County High

This year’s National Signing Day for college football scholarships was Wednesday, February 7.

On Wednesday, February 14, Gadsden County High School held a celebration for the seven student-athletes who signed national letters of intent to attend college and continue their dreams of playing football at the next level.

With the cafeteria filled with fellow students and many family members, each student athlete was recognized, along with having their families come up and join them.

The following is a list of the student-athletes and where they will be continuing their education and playing careers:

Angel Lopez (Defensive Back) – University of Colorado (Boulder, Colorado)

Charmaine Carol (Linebacker) – N.C. Wesleyan University (Rocky Mount, North Carolina)

Josiah Knight (Defensive End) – Mississippi State University (Starkville, Mississippi)

Kemarion Gadson (Wide Receiver) – Valdosta State University (Valdosta, Georgia)

Nasir Williams (Wide Receiver) – University of Central Michigan (Mount Pleasant, Michigan)

Nehemiah McCloud (Defensive Tackle) – N.W. Mississippi Community College (Senatobia, Mississippi)

Ostin Perkins (Running Back) - Valdosta State University (Valdosta, Georgia)

“Central Michigan always treated me like family, so I knew I was always going to stick with them since day one,” Nasir Williams said.

When asked about adjusting to the difference in climate, Williams simply said, “All I’ll need is a jacket. I’ll be fine.”

Josiah Knight was asked about going to Mississippi State and how he would prepare to play in the SEC.

“Everyday I’m working out constantly, just trying to build my wind and build my muscle,” Knight replied. “I’m trying to come in ready.”

When asked why he decided to choose Mississippi State, he said, “Just to go SEC; I couldn’t pass up the opportunity”.

Head coach Russell Ellington has a lot to be proud of, after completing his first year at Gadsden County High. “It just shows kids you don’t have to go to a traditional national powerhouse program to go to college and earn an education,” Ellington said. “You can come to Gadsden County High, put in the hard work, and do what you’re supposed to do and the hard work will pay off.”

Gadsden County High School Principal, Chelsea Franklin also echoed how proud she was of the student-athletes who received scholarships. “I think today was a prime example of the great things that go unnoticed in Gadsden County. I want everyone to know how proud we are of the students who signed, but also it reminds us that our focus continues to be intentional instruction everyday so that our student-athletes are prepared when they go off to college,” Franklin.

Principal Franklin left the students in attendance with a valuable quote, “Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% how you choose to react.”
