Stephen Drake “Steve” Flournoy Sr.

Stephen Drake “Steve” Flournoy Sr., 84, passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 12, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Steve was born March 1, 1942, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Clyde and Anna Flournoy. The son of a Navy lieutenant commander, Steve grew up stationed around the country before his family settled in Gadsden County, Florida. He attended Quincy High School and Chipola Junior College, where he participated in student theatrical productions, chorus and other campus activities and met the love of his life, Annette. He later continued his education at Florida State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.

After graduating from Florida State, Steve began his career with the state of Florida as a social worker. Over the years, he advanced into administration and eventually retired as a senior administrator with the Florida Department of Children and Families. He cared deeply about the people he served and was an active participant in the community throughout his career. For recreation, he played in a band with his close friends called the “Old House Gang.” After retirement, Steve entered the real estate business and opened Outback Properties.

Steve was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he faithfully served on the vestry for many years, including holding the positions of junior warden and senior warden. Outside of work and church, Steve loved the outdoors, music and spending time with the people closest to him. Some of his happiest times were spent hunting with his friends at Soap Stone Hunting Camp, fishing on Lake Talquin and spending time with his family and friends at his family’s house at Mexico Beach.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Anna Flournoy, and his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Nancy Flournoy. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Annette Flournoy; his children, Stephanie Flournoy McMullen and Stephen Drake Flournoy Jr.; his grandchildren, Jennifer Callena Gordon, Hilary Jean Killingsworth (Walt), Ben Flournoy, Margaret Ann McMullen and Cameron McMullen; and his great-grandchildren, Boone Killingsworth and Brim Killingsworth. He is also survived by his sisters, Janice Maxwell (Walter) and Adelaide Lockett; his sister-in-law, Betty Messer (Jim); and numerous extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.

Steve will be remembered as a man of courage, wisdom and compassion. He loved his family deeply, cared about his community and valued the people he was able to serve and know throughout his life. One of Steve’s favorite songs was Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” which reflected the love and commitment he shared with Annette throughout their 62 years of marriage.

Steve’s presence will be deeply missed, but the love, wisdom, compassion and example he leaves behind will continue to live on through his family, his friends and the community he served.

A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery. Due to the extremely warm weather, the family kindly encourages those attending to dress casually and comfortably.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Big Bend Hospice.
