Porterhouse Meat Market brings quality meat cuts to Havana

A journey that began in Lebanon is currently taking shape in Havana.

Fawzie “Zack” Saleh is a meat cutter with over a decade of experience in the meat industry, as well as a graduate of hospitality management training - and Saleh has opened up a storefront meat market shop just south of Havana city limits.

“I have a passion for food and for cooking, and dealing with all kinds of meat,” said Saleh. “When I moved here to the United States, I used to own another meat market in Tallahassee, where I was a partner.”

Saleh began cutting meat in his home town in Lebanon, where he got his start processing meat in a small butcher shop.

After coming to the United States, Saleh advanced his career by obtaining training in hospitality and partnering in opening a meat market in Tallahassee.

From there, he began eyeing the opportunity of owning his own business and meat market - and he settled on re-opening a meat market that was once a Havana household name.

Revel’s Meat Market, a name that Saleh said was well-known in the area, closed several years ago - and while other meat and grocery markets attempted to fill the void left by Revel’s, none have succeeded.

Saleh feels as though he will be the one to bring back to Havana the quality service and food that can be provided by having a local meat market.

“It has been like 15 years ago [since Revell’s]. It was famous, a very famous store,” said Saleh. “I am building back up with new customers and people.”

Saleh opened his storefront - Porterhouse Meat Market - on November 1, at 1412 Florida-Georgia Highway.

“I have a passion for cutting meat - I love cutting meat. Pork, beef, poultry, all of it,” said Saleh, adding that he works with quality meat producers to make sure his cuts and meats are always fresh.

“We have fresh-cut meat that we cut each and every day. We can do custom cuts - anything customers like - we can go inside the cutting room and cut for them,” Saleh adds.

In addition, Saleh says meat markets such as Porterhouse are able to offer better deals and offers to customers - meaning customers don’t have to worry about their bank accounts when buying from local businesses.

In addition to high-quality meat and fresh cuts, Saleh’s shop offers fresh produce, frozen vegetables, frozen breakfast items, pantry groceries, spices, sauces, and more.

“I want people to walk in and feel like they are in their own kitchen,” said Saleh. “Just come in, ask for whatever you need, and we are going to be able to get it.”

In addition to selling standard market meats, Porterhouse Meat Market will be offering meat processing to local hunters during the hunting seasons throughout the year - whether the wild game is fowl, hog, or deer, Saleh says his expertise will leave local hunters happy.

“Bring in your game, we will take care of you.”

While Porterhouse Meat Market is just getting started in Havana, he is already considering the ‘next best thing’ in his business plan - namely, Saleh hopes to expand his meat cutting markets, and bring quality meat and dedicated customer service to more people, more customers, and keep Gadsden and Leon County happy with the food in their freezer.
