Florida Secretary of State names Havana Main Street the Florida Main Street Program of the Month

On Wednesday, August 11, Florida’s Secretary of State Laurel M. Lee visited downtown Havana for a tour of “Florida’s Friendliest Small Town” and to visit with several businesses throughout Havana’s sprawl.

During her visit to Havana, Secretary Lee filmed a special interview with The Florida Channel, discussing the importance of keeping small towns and Main Street organizations thriving; Secretary Lee praised Havana Main Street for its vigilance at keeping both the business and art community alive locally.

Secretary of State Lee is walked through Gadsden County’s tobacco history at the Havana Shade Tobacco Museum.

After the filming segment, representatives with Havana Main Street led Secretary Lee on a tour of the town - stopping in at several businesses and tourist attractions, including the Shade Tobacco Museum.

Later, on Twitter, Secretary Lee praised Havana’s working and artistic community for their efforts.

“While in Havana today, I met with an incredible group of people who own, manage and run some of the businesses, restaurants, art galleries, museums and shops in Havana Main Street,” stated Lee. “These people work hard to meet the needs of the Havana community!”

Meeting with Havana’s downtown business owners and artists was part of the way Secretary of State Laurel M. Lee spent her time in downtown Havana.

Not even 10 days after Lee’s visit to Havana, on August 20, Secretary Lee designated Havana Main Street as the state’s August Florida Main Street Program of the Month.

“Havana Main Street has developed their former retail corridor into a vibrant and dynamic arts district,” said Secretary Lee. “Local artists, business owners and unique restaurants provide opportunities for residents and visitors to dine, shop, and enjoy downtown Havana. Through preservation and economic development, our Main Streets rebuild and reimagine their historic downtowns.”

Havana has been designated as a Florida Main Street community since 2017.
