It’s difficult to put into words how grateful I am for this opportunity. When I graduated from the University of Central Florida (UCF) with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, I wasn’t quite sure where my path would lead. Fortunately, it led me home to Gadsden County, writing for the community that shaped me. I don’t take that lightly, and I promise not to squander it.
During my time at UCF, I wrote for The Charge, covering a wide range of sports, and I eventually served as the publication’s sports editor. I reported on football, basketball, soccer, golf, tennis, volleyball, baseball, cross country, softball, and track and field. I’m eager to bring that experience here. While Gadsden County football is the talk of the town (and I’m thrilled to cover it), my coverage will be well-rounded, giving space to all our athletes. I believe sports reflect life, and I’ll work to capture every angle of it.
Even beyond sports, you’ll see my byline on a variety of stories for The Gadsden County Times. I’ve already covered human-interest pieces and community events, and I look forward to what lies ahead. No story is too small. You have my word: each one will be handled with the respect it deserves.
I live by a strong moral code, and that extends to my work as a journalist. Credibility is fragile—it’s the backbone of what we do—and I will guard it with everything I have during my time here. I promise to be objective, to leave no stone unturned, and to give this everything I’ve got. That’s what the people of this county deserve.
If you have something you believe deserves coverage, or if you’d like to share your perspective on a story, I encourage you to reach out. I’m available on X at @byLeoTorres, and you can reach out to me by email at torresleonardo14@outlook.com.
There’s a quote by Martin Luther King Jr. that reads: “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final say.” I share that belief—and my reporting will reflect that truth.
