Jags top Scorpions in regular season finale

On Friday night, the regular season for local high school hoops ended with a huge county rivalry. The Gadsden County High Jaguars hosted the Crossroad Academy Scorpions. The gymnasium was jam-packed, with many in attendance wearing all black for the “Black-Out” themed season finale.

The visiting Scorpions started the first quarter playing sloppy basketball which resulted in the Jags jumping out to a 7-2 lead to start the game. Crossroad began to turn things around and finished the quarter trailing 9-12.

During the second quarter, as both teams went back and forth giving the other all they had, a Gadsden High player received a technical foul for taunting with 5 seconds remaining. Crossroad made both technical foul free-throws to close the gap before going into halftime trailing by just one point, 28-29.

Fans got their money’s worth, as the third quarter continued to be a close game. This too was another close quarter that ended with Gadsden High holding a 46-42 lead over Crossroad going into the fourth.

As DJ Pring played music and had the gym dancing between quarters, this rivalry game was full of excitement, just as expected. Within the first minute of the fourth quarter, Crossroad jumped out and took a 47-46 lead.

With just under two minutes left in the game, Crossroad made a crucial basket to tie the game up 56-56. Both teams’ fans tried to give them the spark they needed, including the cheerleading squads from both schools battling back and forth. With thirty seconds remaining in the game, Gadsden High led 58-56 and never lost that lead.

Seven seconds remained Crossroad had the ball trailing by just one possession, 59-56; however, they turned the ball over and committed a foul. The Jags made both free-throws and beat the Scorpions 61-56.

Gadsden County High’s Jamari Mosley led the Jags with 18 points.

Crossroad’s Camari Hale led the Scorpions in scoring with 18 points. Myron Tennell, Tyrek Jessie and Ja-Mari Favors all chipped in an additional 10 points each of their own.
