THE DIRT ROAD WONDER – The Preacher and the Big Summer Diamond

Many long years ago, we had a visiting preacher come to our church to preach a revival.

He was what they called an ‘itinerant preacher’ without a church of his own - he just went from church to church, preaching revivals and living off the donations of the good people.

He looked like a dandy, and butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.

This was back in the day when I cooked for the multitudes, that is, everybody liked to come to my house for a meal.

I liked to cook, and they liked to eat.

When we had a visiting preacher, I would always try to feed them one night before the service, along with our preacher, his family and a few friends.

I have never seen a preacher so impressed by wealth as this man was.

I think he looked over the crowd and tried to determine who had money and who didn’t so he would not waste his precious time on the poor folks.

One of my friends had just bought a beautiful two-carat diamond and she wore it that night; that attracted him like a moth to a flame.

The rest of us were just chopped liver compared to the gal with the two-carat diamond ring.

What he didn’t know was that it was a summer diamond - you know, it’s a play on words, summer diamonds and summer not.

It was a beautiful man-made diamond set in a fake gold setting…it looked like the real thing, but it was far from it.

As the evening wore on, I had to keep myself from laughing because I knew what he was doing.

He was sucking up to the big diamond.

I was the only person in the room that knew she had ordered that ring out of a catalog for $49 and that he was making a fool out of himself over a fake diamond.

I don’t know how big the offering was that was given for him, but I can assure you that very little came from the gal with the diamond.

She was as poor as a church mouse.

Isn’t there something about not judging a book by its cover? Does that also apply to gals with big diamond rings?

That same night God protected me from being the laughingstock of the church.

I had bought a package of frozen crowder peas to cook as part of the dinner; I had rinsed them off in a colander and looked them over, or so I thought.

That night when I was pouring the leftovers into containers to put in the fridge, I found the largest, fattest worm in the peas.

What in the world would I have done if that preacher had gotten a helping of peas with the worm in it?

I don’t even want to think about it.

I never knew what happened to that preacher or if he ever found what he was looking for.

Did he not know that he was just chasing pavement?

The Bible says the streets of Heaven are paved with gold, so that just makes gold a paving material.

I hope he found that rich supporter and that he made it to Heaven.
