Cat Tales – The Melee

With one exception, Beebe has adjusted well to having a tiny dog living at our house.

The dog has decided to ignore him for the most part, and lives his life exactly the way he always has; Beebe does have a devilish side where he will lay across the dog’s path to somewhere, so he has to make wide detours to get to where he wants to go.

But, the dog also has a mischievous side.

He will steal the cats’ tiny catnip mice or other small toys.

He will toss them around, bringing them near the cats and then running close and grabbing them away.

Momau hides and Beebe completely ignores this performance as if it wasn’t happening.

So, life goes on, pretty much as usual pre-dog.

I did mention an exception.

That took place last week.

Let me explain.

Dog is old and spends a lot of time sleeping; he curls up in his bed to the left of my chair where I view TV each night.

Beebe is old and very fat and spends a lot of time sleeping.

He is always sprawled across my feet and discarded shoes, snoring away during TV time.

Momau is always hiding somewhere.

Thus we spend our evenings.

On that exceptional night, all was peaceful as I watched Jeopardy.

Sometimes I know an answer and I can’t help shouting it out, and on this particular night, I happened to know quite a few answers (unusual for me - I never know the ones about geography) and I was shouting a lot.

This roused the little dog.

He climbed out of his bed and decided that he, like Beebe, would also like to sleep on my shoeless feet and feetless shoes.

He bumbled his way over and tried to find a spot that fat Beebe hadn’t occupied.

This roused Beebe, who was incensed by this behavior.

He hissed and swatted with a mean claw.

That incited a riot.

Snarling, snapping and swatting ensued.

The fur began to fly.

This rousted Momau out of hiding and she joined the fray, leaping and whirling like an Olympic gymnast.

It was hard to tell which team she was rooting for, as her gymnastics were performed helter-skelter, never favoring one side or the other.

I knew that since I was the only adult in the room, it was up to me to take charge.

I started yelling and scolding the rioters to no avail.

I finally grabbed them by the scruff of their backs to herd them outside.

They took their front paws and held them behind their backs as if they were handcuffed.

They’ve been watching too much TV.

This made me laugh and I dropped all three of them.

Momau scuttled off to a new hiding place.

Little dog climbed back in his bed and was soon asleep.

Beebe curled up on my feet.

I had missed the end of Jeopardy .
