THE DIRT ROAD WONDER – Memories Of My Old House

The one question that I am asked the most is do I miss my home since I moved to Mulligan Park.

No, what I miss is the people that used to live in that house and have now grown up or gone to be with the Lord.

I carry with me what I want from that house and that is a lot of precious memories.

Not a day goes by that I don’t think of my loud noisy family when they were growing up and the good times we had.

I remember my little Penny loved to climb the mimosa tree out back and sit there and watch me in the kitchen; we would wave to each other and laugh.

She always loved for me to read to her and loved the Raggedy Ann books.

Her main love was animals.

I am so glad that she got to go to Africa a year ago and see all those animals; she got to go on safari and the one animal she didn’t get to see was a rhino.

We lost her last September, and that house was so lonely without her.

Then there was my little Jill.

Her favorite sport was to tie a rope between two lawn chairs and run and jump it - a kind of country limbo.

She was always a cheerleader and sometimes she would stand in front of the six-foot mirror in the bathroom and practice her cheers.

She was a cheerleader in college, so I guess all that practice really paid off.

She loved her piano, and that house was too quiet after she grew up and the cheering and piano playing stopped.

My little Jack loved for me to read to him and has carried that love of books into adulthood.

He loved adventure stories and tales of history and lost cities.

He loved his castle and knights, his Jimmy Jet, his Mousetrap game but I think his bicycle was his favorite.

I never dreamed back then that he would bike 30 miles a day when he grew up.

He looked forward to having a baby brother but when we came from the hospital and told him it wasn’t Richard Allen but Rosemary Gaye it was a bit of a shock.

He loved her just the same.

My little Gaye was my helper.

I had a handicraft shop at Gadsden Monuments, and she liked to make little things out of the plaster; sometimes she would have more paint and plaster on her than on what she was making.

She could fix anything from the time she was a little girl and understood how things worked - her friends would come over and bring their Barbies and they would spend the afternoon dressing Barbies.

Her favorite toy was her Fisher Price castle that she got for her birthday.

I miss her being my baby, but they do have a habit of growing up.

I married Brian Kidd when I was 59 years old.

He brought me another son who was in junior high school and the house livened up again.

David hunted and fished with his Daddy and played football for Monroe.

I loved having a kid in the house again and it felt like old times.

He kept us busy attending football games and programs at Monroe.

Once he was dressed as a soldier in a program and I started crying.

He was a senior and I guess it hit me he was old enough to go in the Army.

I might have been an old woman when I got him, but I loved him just the same.

When everyone came home for Christmas that old house rocked with all the noise.

We had Christmas last year at Gaye’s, which is next door to the old house.

I looked over at the house and it looked so dark and sad.

I lost both of my husbands when I was living in that house and that contributes to the feeling of sadness.

Everything turned out fine because I love where I live, and God is still looking out for me.
