THE DIRT ROAD WONDER – Bring on the bands

I like to watch FSU because I have been watching them a long time. When I was a young teenage girl I would ride the bus from Havana to Tallahassee. My uncle John would pick me up at the bus station and I would go to the FSU game with my cousin June.

Everyone would be dressed up for the game and it was a very exciting time. Believe it or not ,it was not unusual to see ladies in hats and gloves. A lot of the ladies would have the large mums on their suits. They sold the mums at the stadium and you always hoped someone would buy you one when you were older.

FSU became coed in 1948 and began planning for a football team. When it was time for the team to play at home they did not have the large Marching Chiefs band so they decided on another way to fill the field. The high school bands in the area were asked to join the Marching Chiefs for halftime. There was a very high platform with the band leader on top in a white suit and hat leading the bands. That is how I was able to be on that field a long time ago.

I think the worst thing to come down the pike is televised football. At halftime these sports announcers come on and tell me everything I have already seen. I’m not an idiot. I saw it the first time. I want to see the halftime show. I have seen the team the school has and now I want to see the band the school has.

I bet the Marching Chiefs outdid themselves at the halftime show in Ireland. Did we get to see it? Heck no, just those two men explaining the first half of the game that I had already seen. I didn’t think it was fair for the network to not let us see the halftime show because it was a very special game.

Another team that has a great marching band is Florida A&M. I think they do the same thing to them, rehash the first quarter. They really put their heart into it when they are marching and I love to watch them. That would be a good way to increase the viewers if you let them see the halftime show.

I just have one question for you. How would you like to go to a silent football game? That’s what you would have without the bands. The football is great but the bands make the game lively.

I know you are wondering why I don’t go to the local games and see the bands for myself. I am 87 now and that ship has sailed. The Bible says there is a season for everything and this is my season to kick back, write and enjoy the grandkids.
