From The Editor’s Desk : Luck of the Irish?

Some people have all the luck….and if I’m being frank, Irish ancestry has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Once, I worked in a newsroom with a fellow reporter who had the most insane luck of any person I had ever met.

If she bought raffle tickets or bought into a 50/50 split pot fundraiser, the rest of us knew better than to also buy in…she was going to win and that’s just the way it was.

I remember watching her win multiple raffles and door prizes at an event we were covering together…and then she looked surprised, because she hadn’t even entered (being on the job, and all).

The woman won a raffle she hadn’t even entered herself into.

(Later we learned that a friend of hers, wanting to test the theory of the insane luck of my coworker, had seen her arrive at the event and bought tickets in my coworker’s name. Sure enough, despite not actually entering herself, my coworker won.)

My coworker was absolutely not Irish at all, and I do have a few family tree branches that dip into Ireland, so I say that the “Luck of the Irish” claim is mostly hogwash and baloney.

My brother is another lucky person (maybe he drank up all the luck and left none for me).

He is the sort of person who, at first glance, seems very very very unlucky - but one a second sight, you realize he’s incredibly, uncannily, lucky.

My brother will leave, forget, drop, or accidentally abandon his wallet in stores, parking lots, on top of a gas station pump - and spend several hours frantically searching his truck, pockets, house, and worksite for the wallet.

Once he rushes back to the gas station, fingers crossed, he will find it exactly where he left it.

If I left my purse or wallet somewhere, I promise you - it would be long gone.

My brother also seems to happen upon the most insane events - if anyone could stumble in, by pure accident, the set of a movie and become a star…it would be him.

His life seems to be a series of strung-along happenstances that end up to his benefit.

Additionally, I know a guy who can’t seem to lose at poker (don’t play Texas Hold’Em with him), or a girl who is always meeting strangers who become her closest friends within a few seconds of conversation.

Luck has many shades, too.

One of my friends has the absolute worst luck when it comes to cars - she seems to total a new car once every six months…but then the flip side is somehow (in her own form of weird luck), each time she totals a car, the universe gives her a gift of a new (or new to her) car, so she is never without transportation.

In comparison...my life seems pretty unlucky.

I don't win raffles or door prizes, I don't find things I've lost, I can't smoke a room at poker, I'm not great at forming instant-friends, and I'm not being given cars.

On the flip side, though, I really enjoy watching raffles and door prizes be distributed - I don't enter withthe anticipation of winning (I know I won't) and so I get genuine joy from seeing others win cash and gifts.

I'm not really all that good at poker - but I like playing it all the same. It's fun, and less stressful if you plan to lose, even if you try your best not to.

I can't walk into a bar and make five new friends instantly...but I don't need to. I've never walked into a bar without a friend at my side to start with. I have a close-knit, incredible group of girl-pals who make my life wonderful. Who needs new friends anyway?

I'm not being given new cars - but I also don't total my car every six months in a wreck. My loyal little Toyota chugs along like a champ, and never complains even if I forget to change the oil in a timely manner.

I'm lucky in other, less extravagant ways, it seems.

I'm lucky because I have a job I love, and my family all live within an hour's drive from my (grandparents, siblings, cousins, etc.)

I'm lucky because I have reliable transportation in a rural community without buses or trains.

I'm lucky because I can walk into a grocery store and buy food.

I'm lucky because I have people who truly care about me.

I'm lucky because I get to wake up each morning in a warm, comfortable bed.

So...I don't know, maybe the little bit of Irish in me is sorta, kinda, maybe lucky after all.
