CAT TALES: A view of the world… from a cat’s perspective

I’m not saying that my cats are smarter than other cats…they’re just better informed than most felines, through no fault of their own.

It’s the television, which I have on most of the time to keep us company.

Beebe has never had any interest in watching TV even when I tried to show him special pet channels when he was a youngster; he would turn his back, yawn and take a nap.

Momau, on the other hand, is fascinated with this marvelous machine.

She stands up on a chair to get as close to the action as possible, and swats at any quick movements she spies there; I find this surprising for a cat who grew up on the street.

Apparently, she is proud to now live in a home that has a big screen high-definition TV, even though I was probably the last person in town to purchase one and it was a very modest one at that.

Anyhow, when one enters the great room, it is comical to see her sitting there, staring at the tube like a spoiled human-child.

Since Beebe does not share this passion for TV watching, why do I say they are well-informed cats?

I say this because even if they are not viewing the TV, they hear the sound.

They hear the news.

They hear the sports.

They hear it all.

They can’t help knowing what is going on in the community and in the world.

I’m not saying that my cats are more self-absorbed than other felines, but I’m sorry to say, I think they are.

Lately, there has been a lot of talk by the TV commentators about Black History Month…Beebe has translated that as Black Cat History Month, so therefore it’s all about him.

He is a handsome cat in his black tuxedo, and he knows it.

He has always taken a lot of care with his ablutions, but this month he has upped his constant grooming.

In the past, Momau has tried to wash him in the morning, only to be rewarded by a swat or a bite.

Lately, he sits still while she works on his huge, obese, long-haired frame.

He is constantly posing like some ancient cat king and strutting around as though descended from royalty.

Momau has watched and listened intently to the Olympics, and she has convinced herself that she is a great Olympian.

When not glued to the TV, she practices her skills.

She certainly has the speed necessary whether running, skating, or skiing. She speeds through the house like a tornado, sending everything in her path flying.

I don’t believe she could win gold, because of all the deductions she would receive, as she careens around, but I keep that opinion to myself.

Beebe watches Momau’s antics out of one sleepy eye.

He thinks his younger stepsister is a silly goose.

Momau watches the airs Beebe is putting on and just shakes her head.

I tell them both they are the best looking, most talented cats in the world.

With President’s Day and Saint Patrick’s Day coming next, I’m not sure what to expect.

Will Beebe be wearing a top hat and a beard? Will Momau claim she is a Protestant orange tabby? Will Beebe wear a green scarf and emulate an Irish Catholic?

I have no idea, but I hope they will both wear white to symbolize the white part of the Irish flag that represents peace.

Then there is the news of Russia perhaps invading Ukraine.

The cats will take opposite sides in this problem.

Beebe will be the pacifist. ‘Let them do what they’ll do’ will be his attitude. He’s too lazy to fight. Momau will jump in a tank and head for the border.

Thinking about all these future problems has really gotten me upset.

I don’t like friction in my home. I want us all to get along.

Oh, what shall I do?

Momau comes whizzing by and stops to play with a cord laying on the floor. Beebe gets off the couch and wanders over to join in the fun.

As they roll and tumble, the TV suddenly goes off.

They have unplugged it with their frolicking.

I am about to scold them, and then it dawns on me.

I wasn’t saying my cats are smarter than other cats, but now I am.

They knew what the trouble was.

They took care of the problem.

I am going to be a better cat mom - I am not going to have the TV on all the time. I am going to monitor what they see or hear.

There are some things these cats don’t need to know.
