Cats versus humans Judy Conlin

I have made fun of the cats because they have had so much trouble adjusting to the new porch door which opens from the opposite side. Beebe refused to use it at all. Momau would only use it if I held it open for a long while and then would burst through at top peed with a terrified look in her eyes. They have both now been able to come through that door if I stand guard holding it so it cannot get away and come after them. They do not yet trust it at all, but they are able to utilize it under certain conditions. If someone else comes through that door, it does make a loud noise closing, which causes a speedy retreat into hiding. Still, they have improved and are trying to adjust to their owner’s penchant for changing things. The biggest change is the change in their owner. She is sorry for making fun of them for their idiosyncrasies regarding change. What has brought about this metamorphosis in her? I believe it is her (my) examination of how she reacts to change herself. Let me explain. I still reach to the wrong side of that door to open it. I don’t act terrified or flee, but I don’t seem able to remember that the handle is now on the other side, That is not my only odd reaction to change. I still walk around a 3 foot rabbit statue which I removed from my hallway half a century ago because I was afraid it was going to get knocked over and broken. Old habits are hard to break. I reach in the top drawer of my dressing table to get the cat’s brush before realizing it is now in the kitchen because he would not allow me to put on makeup by pawing at both me and that drawer because he wanted brushed. Whenever I venture outside, I am surprised there is a different car in my driveway. For a moment I have forgotten I bought a new car. The gardener has moved the hose, and I walk around in a daze looking for it. It is obvious that humans (at least this one) have trouble adjusting to change also. All this leads me to ponder if I am like a cat. I begin watching them closely. They are finicky eaters. I think about this. I would hate having a can of tuna as my meal every day. I like variety also. The one thing they never turn their nose up at is cat treats. I, too, am always happy with desserts. My cats are constantly involved with grooming themselves. Because I live with that diva alter ego of mine, Nurse Judy, grooming becomes a major part of my life. The cats don’t like to be woken up rudely from their naps. They might even growl or swat. The older I get, the more I cherish sleep. Once I can reach that state. I do not take calmly being rudely awakened. I’ve been known to growl or swat at the transgressor. That transgressor is often one of the cats. My cats do not like the cold. They are always looking for a warm and cozy place to recline in. The older I get the more I crave warmth. I must have long sleeves, a sweater, a comfortable temperature on the thermostat and many granny throws on hand just in case they’re needed. They say that human beings have evolved higher than the lowly cat, but I am beginning to wonder. They have found someone to provide their shelter, the utilities, their groceries, recreational materials, love, and understanding and help overcoming irrational fears. Tell me. Is this human of superior intellect able to do that? Maybe, in her younger days, but certainly not now. I’ve concluded that I am not going to make fun of my cats any more for their irrational behavior. I may have some traits of my cats, but if they were left on their own tomorrow, those guys would be able to find their own food, live in the wild and survive. I wouldn’t survive a week. Cats have 9 lives. I have 1. Is it too late to turn my human citizenship in for cat citizenship?
