Roy D. Mitchell, 78, of Quincy, Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28, 2025, in Valdosta, Georgia.
Born on August 29, 1947, in Quincy, Florida, Roy lived a life marked by service, kindness, and devotion to family. He later made his home in Valdosta, Georgia, and Lowndes County, where he spent many of his later years.
Roy proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1988 after years of honorable service. Following his military career, he retired and enjoyed a quieter life centered on family and personal interests. He completed some college coursework and remained a lifelong learner.
Known for his gentle spirit and warm heart, Roy was a very kind and loving soul who never hesitated to help others. He was the type of person who would “give you the shirt off his back.” He deeply loved his family and treasured time spent together, especially enjoying family cookouts. In his leisure time, he found joy in metal detecting and working with computers.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Okson Mitchell of Valdosta, Georgia; his son, Daniel D. Mitchell of Atlanta, Georgia; his daughter, Sophia S. Parrish of Osan, South Korea; five grandchildren, Samuel Mitchell, Seth Mitchell, and Daphne Mitchell, all of Atlanta, Georgia, and Gabryel Parrish and Xavier Parrish of Osan, South Korea; his brother, Robert C. Mitchell, Sr. of Quincy, Florida; his aunt, Carrie Hanks of Bellevue, Nebraska; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at St. John A.M.E. Church in Quincy, Florida. Interment will follow at Tallahassee National Cemetery in Tallahassee, Florida. Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at St. John A.M.E. Church, Quincy, Florida.
Professional services are entrusted to Bradwell Mortuary, Quincy, Florida.
