Veteran Service Office to close temporarily

The Gadsden County Veteran Service Office will be closed on Monday, October 3 through October 7 for employee training, which will be given by the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs.

The office will reopen on Monday, October 10 at 8 a.m.

If you have an appointment at the VA clinic and you’re needing transportation, please call the office before 3 p.m. on Friday, September 30 to make arrangements.

American Pickers is looking for collections for next TV season

The American Pickers television show is looking for large, rare collections to pick through and spotlight in their next season.

Collections of never-before-seen items, and items with unique stories are preferred.

If you have a collectable and antique collection that you believe would be of interest to the show, send an email to americanpickers@cineflex.com or a voicemail message at (646) 493-2184.

Both the email and voicemail should include information on your name, the state and town where you live; a good phone number to reach you; where your collection is located; and a description of items included in your collection.

Who knows, you may be featured on the next season of American Pickers !

Quincy local named to Southern New Hampshire University’s President List

Evelia Mendez Elicea of Quincy has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s Summer 2022 President’s List.

The summer terms run from May to August.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the President’s List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.

Southern New Hampshire University is a private, nonprofit institution with an 89-year history of educating traditional-aged students and working adults.

Exhibit on Historic Havana to open on September 24

A unique, pictorial timeline of Havana’s history will be on display at the Shade Tobacco Museum, starting September 24.

Kicking off the opening of the exhibit, the Havana History Heritage Society will be hosting a grand opening of the showcase, with a presentation from local historian Dale Cox.

Cox will discuss the rich history surrounding the Havana region.

The community is invited to attend, and the presentation will begin at 11 a.m.

The museum is located at 204 Northwest 2nd Street, in Havana.

Big Bend Hospice searches for veterans to volunteer

Big Bend Hospice is searching for veterans of the United States military branches to volunteer in roles that support veterans and veteran families who are being supported by the hospice program.

United States veterans who are interested in volunteering can attend an in-person training session through Big Bend Hospice on Saturday, September 24 and Saturday, November 12.

The sessions will last from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., and will be held at the Big Bend Hospice Campus at 1723 Mahan Center Boulevard, in Tallahassee.

Volunteers with Big Bend Hospice program social, emotional, and practical support, can help oversee outdoor activities, volunteer to assist families with household projects and shopping/errand/appointment trips, reading to or holding conversations with patients, and documenting the life stories of patients. In addition, veteran volunteers may be called upon to participate in valor ceremonies for veteran patients.

Superhero-themed art gallery to open this week at Gadsden Arts Center

The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum will be welcoming the community of Gadsden County, and its surrounding areas, to an art gallery and opening reception that celebrates superheroes and the amazing work of Marvel Comics illustrator Alex Ross.

Experience the Marvelocity exhibition featuring 57 original paintings and sculptures by comic book illustrator Alex Ross, who combines classic artistry with the sheer fantasy of superheroes.

In a style that owes as much to Norman Rockwell as it does to legendary illustrator Jack Kirby, Ross makes the nearly impossible look easy, bringing our favorite characters to life.

The all-ages opening reception will take place on Friday, September 23 at 6 p.m. - children and museum members will be admitted into the reception for free, and anyone who arrives dressed as a superhero will also receive free entry.
