Art comes to the Courthouse Square with the opening of the 33rd Art in Gadsden exhibition

After a long year of isolation, the Gadsden County community is invited to come out and celebrate art with friends and family on the Gadsden County Courthouse Square and at the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum, as the gallery commemorates its 33rd Art in Gadsden Juried Exhibition.

This longtime Quincy tradition features 99 works by 88 artists from the Big Bend Region, and artists who may live elsewhere but all have roots in Gadsden County.

The festivities will kick off on Friday, July 9, as Gadsden Arts and Quincy Main Street introduce a live concert by Southward Soul; at the concert, there will be plenty of food trucks and community fun!

Catering at the Friday kick-off will be food trucks from Big Babies BarBQue, Pop’s Kountry Kitchen, Old Skool, and Pineappetite - all will be serving meals to enjoy.

The Opening Celebration for the gallery will be held on the Courthouse Square in downtown Quincy from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

The Awards Ceremony will be outside on the square at 7 p.m., during which juror for the 33rd Annual Art in Gadsden Exhibition Aja Roache will announce the award winners.

Roache serves as a gallery director for Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery on Florida A&M University campus and teaches Museum Studies courses.

Roache’s accomplishments include curating exhibitions for multiple local cultural institutions including the 621 Gallery, the Meek-Eaton Black Archives, and The Havana History and Heritage Society.

The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum says it is thrilled to have Roache serving as the juror for this year’s exhibition.

New artists to the show will be presented by Art in Gadsden, including Mark Giorgiades, and there will also be a selection of well-known artists to the community, like exhibition founder Beth Appleton.

Giorgiades’ sculpture for the show, Behind the Facade, is a human figure crafted out of steel cut nails welded together holding a face mask; in this beautifully rendered piece, Giorgiades explores what lies beyond the exterior of a person.

Appleton’s piece for the show, titled Pisces, is a watercolor cut paper assemblage depicting a woman wearing a mask, with an intricate design and vibrant color.

Beth’s stunning design reflects human tenacity over this past year; Pisces being one of 12 portraits of Beth’s 2020 collection.

The exhibition opens for public view on Friday, July 9 and will remain on display at the gallery through September 18.

Gadsden Arts Center & Museum is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m.

For the safety of museum visitors and staff, masks are required for those who have not been vaccinated.

Exhibition admission is free for children 17 and under, and a $5 fee for nonmember adults; the Fletcher Museum shop admission is free for everyone.
