Midway City Council makes moves to repair dangerous roads

Midway City Council recently awarded a bid to North Florida Asphalt to repair a sunken area of Rustling Pine Road.

The estimated cost of repairs will be $8,200.

While some of the council members agreed repair of the road is needed, others felt like there are other areas in the Midway that need attention, including dangerous roads that could cause accidents.

The council members said Palmer Road is also in need of repair.

After a lengthy discussion, the city council voted unanimously to work on the areas of Rustling Pine Road that need it the most.

The council members also agreed to address other roads that need repair during the next city council meeting, which is set to be held on Thursday, August 4.

In other matters, the council also voted to apply for a $75,000 grant that would help the city prepare to recover from catastrophic storms.

The grant is used to help coastal and inland communities prepare for the adverse impacts of flooding and storm surge.

With a unanimous vote, the council authorized the mayor, and City Manager Dr. Henry Grant to submit a Resiliency Grant Application to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

This grant could help the citizens of Midway get back to normal living if a devastating storm were to hit the city.

According to the Department of Environmental Protection’s website, the Resilient Florida Programs offers a variety of funding opportunities to assist eligible entities in assessing the risks of, planning for, and adapting to flooding and sea level rise.

This includes analysis of vulnerabilities and risks, and the development of plans and policies so that communities can identify and prepare for those risks.

At the end of the council meeting, the floor was opened to the public.

Resident Shaia Simmons thanked the officers of Midway for their hard work dealing with a recent rash of burglaries.

Last month Simmons shared a video on Facebook of what appeared to be armed, masked individuals attempting to burglarize vehicles in her neighborhood.w Chief Kristi Cobb expressed the need for more officers.

The chief explained how it is difficult to bring in more officers for the city of Midway, due to the competition of salary in the surrounding areas.

The council members agreed to try to find more resources, so the City of Midway can bring in more officers.
