Pinewood Derby puts young racers on the track

The monthly Havana Car Show brings together a crowd of youth and adult car enthusiasts and families for an evening of fun, sports cars, antique and retro cars, and more.

This month, the October Havana Car Show brought families and friends to Havana to watch local children race their personally prepared Pinewood Derby cars.

The winners of the Age 4-6 Division of the Pinewood Derby in Havana are, from left to right, Finnley Strickland (third place), Tanner Rowan (first place), and Hunter Tiller (second place).

A total of 20 pine cars competed in the free event, which was sponsored by Havana Main Street.

The race was open to any local youth between the ages of 4-14.

The car kits, which included a block of wood, wheels, and nails for axles, were picked prior to the event from Stone’s Home Center, Havana Main Street, or Havana Police Department.

After picking up their kit, children prepared their car by affixing the wheels and decorated it in their own personal design.

The race track was prepared and ready for participants as they began arriving at 3:30 p.m. for registration and to take a few test runs on the track.

The winners of the Age 7-10 Division of the Pinewood Derby, which was held on October 16, are - from left to right - Carter Strickland (first place), Cason Turnage (second place), and Trenton Morris (third place).

The races started at 4 p.m., with cars in three groups, ages 4-6, 7-10 and 11-14.

Each car ran and was timed on each of the four tracks to ensure no one track held an advantage.

Cars in each heat scored 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place.

The winners of ages 4-6 were Tanner Rowan in 1st place, Hunter Tiller in 2nd place, and Finnley Strickland in 3rd place.

Winners in ages 7-10 were Carter Strickland in 1st place, Cason Turnage in 2nd place, and Trenton Morris in 3rd place.

Sara Hall was the only contestant to compete in the Age 11-14 Division of the Pinewood Derby, giving her an automatic win. Hall is a repeat-competitor, and the 2019 returning champion.

The age group 11-14 had only one contestant, the returning champion from 2019, Sara Hall.

Hall came with her prepared car ready to repeat her win, but had no competition.

For fun, Hall’s car took several runs down the track, which showed that she would have been a fierce contender had there been other contestants.

The three best decorated cars chosen were Alexis Hayes in 1st place, Mason Meeks in 2nd place, and Aveya Cain in 3rd place.

Each winner was given a Gold, Silver or Bronze Medal. All entrants received race flags to wave their cars to victory!
