From The Editor’s Desk – A matter of resolve

I doubt a brief glance at my New Year’s resolution list would be very entertaining - I have no plans to scale mountains, take any international trips, or engage in any risky behaviors like skydiving.

Instead, my resolutions are more aligned with a common core of the lifestyle I want to live, and strive daily to live: read more books - at least two a month, read my Bible more, do better at connecting with friends and family, designate time for self reflection and journaling, do more personal writing, and create one thing (whether by painting, sewing, or whatever strikes my fancy) each month.

I’m not a very exciting person, unfortunately.

But there is one resolution on my list that has to do with every single person reading this now: be a better newspaper editor.

I know I have the tendency to be difficult on myself (I am, after all, a perfectionist), but this resolution doesn’t have anything to do with me thinking I am currently doing a bad job - I don’t think I’ve been doing all that bad a job.

But, I think in everything we are passionate about, there is room for improvement and growth - and each year, I want to chase after that improvement like a rabbit chasing a carrot on a stick.

I want a desire for a better future for Gadsden County and a better newspaper for our readers to propel me to do my best - do better than last year’s best - and to encourage my fellow staff members here at The Gadsden County Times , as well as The Havana Herald , The Chattahoochee News-Herald , The Sneads Sentinel , The Bradfordville Bugle , and (my newest project) The St. Augustine News-Line to do some of the same.

Newspapers are deeply important to me (I don’t think I would be in this position if they weren’t), and I want to see the future of newspapers flourish, but more than that…I want to see this newspaper flourish.

I want the Gadsden County community to see their local papers as a true resource, as a confidant when things need to be addressed, an engaging and interesting read, and a place to learn, grow, and discover.

I want 2023 to be the best year that The Gadsden County Times has ever had!

As such, I’d like to encourage our readers to always feel welcome to reach out to me - what can we do better? What are we doing a great job with already?

My email inbox is always open, and I would love to hear from you, to hear what it is that we can do better and what we are already doing well.

What stories would you like to see more of?

Is there a region of the county that you feel is being underserved by our paper?

What do YOU want out of your local newspaper?

In this year, I hope you’ll drop me a line sometime and let me know your thoughts, and if you have concerns, I want to hear those as well.

I resolve to do better, to be the best newspaper in the State of Florida, and I hope you’ll help us here in this little newspaper office accomplish that.
