Dedication ceremony held for butterfly sculpture

The Havana Garden Club held an official dedication of its butterfly sculpture in the butterfly garden next to the Havana Public Library on Monday, May 13

The sculptor, Mark Georgiades, said he was approached by club member Dianne Croley, who he knows from The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum in Quincy.

“They wanted to make something to put in the garden,” Georgiades said.

Croley said she was familiar with Georgiades’ work because he had won first place at the annual Art in Gadsden show at Gadsden Arts Center & Museum a few years ago. She had also seen several of his sculptures at other exhibitions there.

“The garden club board visited Mark at his studio and we were all impressed with his work, so we decided to commission him to create our garden centerpiece,” Croley added.

Georgiades said the club wanted a sturdy, six-foot tall structure that could last outside.

“She said it’s going in the butterfly garden,” Georgiades said. “I said, ‘How about we do a butterfly.”’

Georgiades drew a plan for the club, and they commissioned him to make the sculpture.

Within two weeks, it was done.

“She knew I was a Havana native,and it’s something for the community I live in,” said Georgiades, who lives in Lake Tallavana.

Georgiades said he is not a full-time sculptor.

“It’s just something I like to do,” he added.

He sculpted in high school and college, but worked as an auto mechanic for more than 40 years.

He picked the craft back up in 2017, after rering.

“It’s not a job, just something I love to do, and something to keep me busy,” Georgiades said.

The sculptor also mentioned that Gadsden Arts has been an outlet for him, and is a great place to see art.

He said he has a massive sculpture that will be featured in this year’s Art in Gadsden showcase.

The dedication ceremony was followed by a luncheon held at the Hazel J. Baker Community Center.
