The Apalachicola Arsenal Museum, located at the Florida State Hospital has been selected to showcase an exciting exhibit like no other. The Smithsonian WaterWays Exhibit is opening in Chattahoochee this weekend, on Saturday, August 28, with an assortment of amazing exhibits! The exhibit will showcase every aspect of water and how important our waterway, such as the Apalachicola River, is in the Gadsden County community. Featured speakers throughout the course of the showcase will include visitors from Northwest Management, Apalchicola Riverkeepers, Florida State University’s Marine Lab, and many more. The speakers will share prominent details on waterways, as well as historical components to water, and pollution lessons. There will also be over 30 handcrafted, locally-decorated wooden water droplet art pieces that will be sold through a bid to raise money for the museum. The local museum plans to receive several 150-300 pound crates of supplies needed to create the Waterways exhibit, which will approximately take six hours to display in the museum. The exhibit will also feature various storytelling about local waterways, including some storytelling by Billy Blackman, a photographic art selection from renowned photographer Clyde Butcher, and much more. The museum currently has 20 to 25 volunteers helping with the event, as well working with the Department of Health and Florida State Hospital Infection Department to minimize the spread of COVID-19 during the exhibit. Coordinator of the Apalachicola Arsenal Museum, Linda Kranert explains her goals of what she would like the community to learn about the exhibit. “My goal for the community is for everyone to appreciate what we have with our local waterway. So many times we may litter and that’s destroying our ecosystem. I hope this waterways exhibit displays how important water really is and how much we should appreciate it,” said Kranert. The WatersWays Exhibit will be unveiled with a grand opening on Saturday, August 28 and the exhibit will remain on display until October.
