CAT TALES – Memorial Day – The Gadsden County Times

Memorial Day got me to thinking. What do my cats know about Memorial Day? Have I neglected their education regarding honoring our dead soldiers? Do they have relatives who have given their lives protecting cat turf? I have no idea. There’s so little I know about their history.

I’m almost positive that neither cat served in any kind of cat military. You may wonder why I am convinced of that when I’ve just written I know little about their backgrounds. The answer is simple. Beebe is built like a sumo wrestler, yet he runs for home as quickly as possible if a stray cat is in the area. Once inside, with firm walls and plates of glass separating him from the intruder, he is a tiger, growling and flailing around as though he could tear that stranger apart. He’s only brave when there is no way the enemy can get to him so he would never have done well in a militia.

As far as Momau goes, she’s a girl and afraid of anything-man, woman, beast or even a falling leaf. All a cat military could use her for is a scout, now that she is back to perching on the chimney.

I have even less knowledge of their relatives’ lives as far as serving or dying in any cat fights so I’m just not sure how to proceed preparing them for this very significant holiday. I decide I must check into their backgrounds. I know that the Havana library has a course for people to search out their ancestry, so I hustle down there. They do but unfortunately it is not set up for cats. I guess I’m on my own as far as cat genealogy is concerned. I move on.

Are my cats even patriotic? Do they love America? I wrestle with this. Do they even know what or where America is? My only clue is that marching bands get their immediate attention, and if they hear that music they strut around proudly. I give them partial credit for that. It seems patriotic. I know they love their home (at least the feeding station) so they rack up another half point.

Next, I ponder over their politics. I don’t even know if my cats are republicans or democrats. I start thinking about Beebe. The Republican symbol is an elephant. Beebe is huge like an elephant. Elephants never forget and Beebe remembers all the tricks he learned as a kitten. Republicans want borders to keep immigrants out. Beebe wants fences to keep those neighborhood cats out. Yes, Beebe must be a Republican.

The symbol for Democrats is a donkey. Donkeys are stubborn. There is no one more stubborn than Momau. She is definitely pro-abortion. Those 5 kittens almost did her in. She believes female cats should have control of their own bodies and decisions about such matters should only be decided by the cat and her vet. Yes, Momau must be a Democrat.

I decide to test this further. I sit them both in front of Fox news on TV. They both turn their backs and walk away. Aha, they’re not Republican. I try the same test with CNN news with the same result. My cats are apolitical. I’m glad they’re smarter than humans in this respect.

I give up trying to figure them out. I tell them that Memorial Day is the unofficial beginning of summer, and we will celebrate it with hot dogs, hamburgers, and tuna salad. I tie red, white, and blue ribbons on their collars. They rush to their beloved feeding station in anticipation.

As I thank all those Americans who died to keep us free on this Memorial Day, I guess my cats are just glad to be alive and have a home. Hope your holiday was great, and all your pets got a special treat even if they didn’t know what the whole thing was about.
