Quincy native Angela Sutton was recently promoted to the position of Vice President of Enterprise Risk Services at Tulane University in New Orleans.

A press release from the university says Sutton has been an integral part of the Office of the Chief Operating Officer team since joining Tulane in 2021.

Shortly after she was hired, she faced the twin crisis of Hurricane Ida and COVID-19.

“In these and other challenging circumstances, Angela has consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the risk management strategies necessary to protect the Tulane community, its facilities and operations,” Patrick Norton, who serves as the

senior vice president, chief operating officer, and treasurer, said in the press release.

Norton expressed his confidence in Sutton’s expertise, enthusiasm, and said her strategic vision will continue strengthening Tulane’s risk management.

Sutton, who is the daughter of Reginald and Betty James of Quincy, graduated from James A. Shanks High School in 1988.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering from Florida A&M University, which is also her mom and dad’s alma mater.

She is currently enrolled in Tulane’s Executive Master of Business Administration program and on track to complete her MBA in May.

“Her mother and I are proud of her achievements in higher education,” former Superintendent of Gadsden County Public Schools Reginald James said. “Her success is another family blessing that we thank God for.”

James said he hopes his daughter’s success serves as an inspiration to others aspiring to achieve their career goals, regardless of their ethnicity or gender.

While in high school, Sutton had aspirations of becoming a pharmacist but had a change of heart after attending a summer program at Florida A&M.

“I decided to pursue a career in engineering after attending a summer program at Florida A&M University that focused on recruiting minorities into the engineering field,” Sutton shared. “I selected chemical engineering because I both enjoyed and excelled in Chemistry while in high school and thought that chemical engineering would allow me to pursue that passion while challenging and expanding my view of the engineering field.”

Since then, Sutton has a discovered passion for occupational health and safety management which subsequently transitioned to risk management.

In her role as vice president of enterprise risk services, Sutton oversees several

departments and units responsible for managing institutional risks. These groups include insurance, business continuity, disaster recovery, policy development, workers’ compensation, risk management, and environmental health and safety.

She leads the development and implementation of processes to identify, analyze, evaluate, respond to, control, monitor, and report key organizational risks.

“My goal is to build a risk-aware culture across Tulane University through consistent application of risk management principles at all institutional levels,” Sutton said.

As for her personal life, Sutton and her husband Gene have been married for 29 years.

Sutton met her husband while in college.

“They say opposites attract, and in our case, that certainly held true. While I leaned towards a more conservative, strategic, and analytical mindset, he embodied the loquacious, outgoing nature reminiscent of my father,” Sutton said. “His focus on goals and dreams echoed my father’s enthusiasm, providing me with a source of inspiration during moments of career uncertainty.”

Upon graduating college and relocating to Kentucky for work as a process engineer at a chemical plant, Angela pondered the future of their relationship. However, Gene surprised her with a heartfelt gesture, driving ten hours from Tallahassee to Paducah, Kentucky, to propose. Subsequently, he engaged in a thoughtful discussion with her parents, outlining his plans for their future together, and her their blessings.

Gene also works at Tulane in the Information Technology Department. Focusing on access control, he also manages his consulting business alongside his responsibilities at Tulane.

“It is great to be a part of a union that prays and stays together, and experiences life as a team,” Angela said. “Early in our marriage, we found out that we are much better as a team.”

The couple has two children. Their daughter Alexys is 24 and graduated from Florida A&M with a Bachelors in Public Relations. She works at Tulane in the communications department and is pursuing her Master of Business Administration. Their son

Gene Reginald is 20 and is furthering his education in the technology field and pursuing a career as a programmer and game designer.
