Western wear and the Word: a unique Sunday at The Creek

Pastor Terrence D. Milton always delivers a powerful message, and this past first Sunday at Bear Creek Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, “ The Creek” , was no exception. Adding a unique twist to the service, the congregation came dressed in Western attire, embracing cowboy boots, hats, big belt buckles, and denim. This unconventional dress code offered everyone a chance to express their individuality while paying homage to a simpler era that forms a significant part of our nation's heritage.

The relaxed attire served as a reminder of the enduring contributions of farmers, ranchers, and freedmen to American culture. Yet, the focus remained firmly on worship and praise, with the Western theme enhancing, rather than detracting from, the sacredness of the occasion.

A brief look at cowboy church

According to Christian Ministry Edu, western-themed worship isn’t new in states like Texas, Oklahoma, and others across the West, western-themed worship isn’t new in states like Texas, Oklahoma, and others across the West. Cowboy Churches have long offered informal services where attendees can forgo traditional "Sunday best" for practical attire like jeans, boots, or even camo. This style of worship reflects the rugged lifestyle of ranchers, farmers, and working-class individuals, emphasizing simplicity and authenticity in faith.

Sunday’s message: "I’ve Got Orders From on High"

Pastor Milton’s sermon, “I’ve Got Orders From on High,” was rooted in Psalms 37:23-24:

"The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand."

He used this scripture to illustrate the concept of authority and divine guidance, drawing a parallel with the military. Pastor Milton explained that in the military, nothing happens without orders. A recruit must wait for orders to move to the next level, receive placement, or be stationed. Even seasoned personnel must wait for directives and follow them once issued. He emphasized, “Orders never come from below.” A Private cannot give orders to a Sergeant, nor can a Lieutenant command a Colonel or General. Similarly, even business owners take orders—from their customers. Pastor Milton underscored that true direction always flows from a higher authority, reminding the congregation that in life and faith, believers are called to submit to God's divine order.

The pastor emphasized the transformative power of allowing God to guide our steps, referencing Psalm 119:133:

"Order my steps in Your Word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me."

By embracing this divine order, Pastor Milton encouraged the congregation to step confidently into their God-ordained purpose, trusting that their path is part of a greater plan established before the foundation of the world.
