“This Is Definitely What Community Is.” – Gadsden County comes together to help local family after house fire

Gadsden County Commissioner Ronterious Green and Kingdom Glory Worship Assembly hosted a cleaning supply giveaway and supply drive for the Lockwood family last week.

The event was held at the Quincy & Community Deliverance Church of God In Christ.

Faith leaders and other volunteers gave away cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, face masks and more to people as they drove through the church’s parking lot, some of them also dropping off donations for the Lockwood family.

Tequilla Lockwood and her children lost their home and most of their possession in it to a fire on Christmas Eve.

Green said he came up with the idea to host the two events together, because people were calling him asking how they could help the family.

“The love that has been shown towards this family has been nothing but amazing,” Green said.

Some of those driving through to pick up supplies dropped off money, toiletries, bicycles, and more.

“This is definitely what community is,” Green said.

Green said giving away something as simple as cleaning supplies has a tremendous impact on the community.

“You’d really be surprised of the people who are really in who will not ask for anything” Green said. “Just seeing the smiles, and people saying thank you, and a sense of community all together.”

Green said Lockwood wasn’t looking to receive any handouts.

“Like I told her, ‘You give, you’re a sewer, you pour into other people’s lives,’” Green shared.

Green said that Lockwood’s five children are adopted - and she’s loved them since they were born.

“The youngest one is three, the oldest is 16 and she’s had them since they were babies from the hospital, and she gives to these kids all that she has,” Green said.

Green said even on the Sunday after the house fire, Lockwood sent her usual tithe and offering to her church.

Lockwood said she is grateful for the support she has received from the community.

“So many people have come out to support me and my family,” Lockwood said emotionally. “I am so happy; I’m overwhelmed; I didn’t know so many people loved me, so many people supported my family.

Lockwood said she’s received many phone calls, donations, and prayers from people who just want to help, some from people who she doesn’t even know.

With many stores being closed for the holiday, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Quincy opened its Essentials Closet on Christmas Eve for the family.

Thanks to donations of toiletries and home products from its members, the church was able to fully provide emergency toiletries to the Lockwoods.

Although she lost nearly everything in her home, Lockwood said she is just thankful that her 16-year-old son Jamaal, who was home at the time, made it out alive.

Jamaal, who is the Student Government Association President of Robert F. Munroe Day School, said one of the lessons his mother has always taught him and his siblings is the value of life and how material things can be replaced.
