Ride ‘Em Cowboy – American Western culture comes to Quincy Rodeo

It’s not often the rodeo comes to Quincy, but when it does the stands are packed with fans!

The word rodeo is derived from the Spanish word “rodear” meaning “roundup” - as in rounding up the cattle.

Many rodeo practices were learned from Spanish and Mexican ranchers.

The practices such as bull riding have long since become and made the American traditional rodeo a popular and loved historical sporting event.

If you made it to the Gadsden County Rodeo in Quincy last weekend, you may have been wowed by cowboys, cowgirls, bucking broncs, and brave acts performed by professionals who have dedicated their lives to the sport and entertainment of the American equestrian and livestock world.

Locals were invited to participate in special event portions and the Chattahoochee Fire Department represented Sneads well on the first night of the rodeo when Sammy Rudd, Johnny Yawn, and Brett McDaniel won the Wild Donkey Race!

Mathew Smith from Alabama, the current reigning Professional Cowboy Association (PCA) champion, made an impressive 81-point bareback ride.

Delmond Henderson from Louisiana was the rodeo clown and had the large rodeo crowd of fans laughing on the edge of their seats waiting for what he was going to say or do next.

Children dressed in Western attire watched the professionals in admiration.

A special ceremony was dedicated to America and the importance of freedom of religion.

Proud Americans stood with hats off and hands across their chests in a show of respect when a group entered the center of the arena holding a huge American flag.

Mack Ginn gave a very respectful Christian American speech before leading the rodeo in prayer; Ginn also spoke of his love for this great country and honored the veterans who have served.

Quite a scare happened during the bull riding portion of the event when a rider fell from a bull and was trampled, but luckily, he was able to get out from under it and climb the gate to safety.

This is just a reminder of the dangers that the men and women who work the rodeo circuits face and endure.

It was an all-around family friendly event that will keep the community talking with excitement until the next rodeo comes to town.

Those who were unable to attend this year can stay updated and informed through the Gadsden County Horseman’s Association Facebook page on when other rodeos will come to town.

A little cowgirl enjoys a sweet treat from one of the food vendors who were present for the 5th annual Big Bend Rodeo that was held last weekend in Quincy.

Keeping the arena safe and secure were several horseback cowboys. These men escorted bucking broncos back to the pen, kept riders safe, and patrolled the fence line to keep the audience at a safe distance.
