Midway City Council approves grant agreement for new sewer system

The Midway City Council held its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 6 at City Hall.

The first item on the agenda was a request to appoint Carol West to the Midway Planning and Zoning Board’s At-Large Seat.

The appointment of West was approved by a unanimous vote from the city council.

The council next considered the appointment of two city council members to serve on the canvas committee for the 2023 Municipal Election, which will be held on April 25.

Councilmembers Charles Willis and Charles Williams were in consideration for the committee, and Councilwoman NanDrycka King Albert asked both to confirm that they were not involved in the campaigns of any of the 2023 election candidates.

Both Willis and Williams assured the council they were not, and the council then voted unanimously to appoint both to the canvas committee.

The city council then reviewed a request to execute a grant agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help the city transition from individual septic tanks into a centralized sewer system.

The $3,943,971 grant will cover the cost of installing the main sewer line, along with the removal of septic systems and connection of each home to the main line.

It should also be noted that, while the city cannot force residents to connect to the system, it is highly recommended that they do so, because the grant will only cover the cost of connection during the project time frame, and any later connections would be at the homeowner’s expense.

The project will begin in the areas of the city with the highest population density, and eventually cover the entire city.

The city council voted unanimously to approve execution of the grant agreement.

The next item on the agenda was a request to purchase a shade structure for the picnic area in Hilltop Park.

The City of Midway received a $50,000 Florida Recreation Development Assistance Grant for improvements to Hilltop Park, and City Manager Dr. Henry Grant asked the council for authorization to purchase and install the shade structure for $37,097.

The council voted unanimously to approve the request.
