It’s a girl thing – Annual event continues to empower teen girls

More than a dozen young ladies participated in the annual “It’s A Girl Thing” last month.

Each year the event is hosted by founder and president of Support to Live, Sophia Grandison.

This year it was held on the grounds of the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Grandison said the event is catered to teen girls from all backgrounds.

Grandison said “It’s A Girl Thing” started with 12 girls, but this year there were 18 participants.

Over the course of the evening, the young ladies heard from guest speakers Keyondio Lee, Chattahoochee Elementary School Principal Camry Floyd, and Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office Captain Anglie Holmes.

Its purpose is to provide motivation and inspiration to make sure the girls know they are seen and heard.

“I too have been a young lady bullied before,” Grandison shared. “I felt there was no one to listen to me.”

The girls hear from motivational speakers, and engage in “Table Talk,” where they sit at a table and discuss issues that are troubling them.

“Girls deal with a lot…self-injurious behavior, bullying, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, loss, abuse,” Grandison, who has two daughters of her own, said.

When they arrive at the event, they are given the opportunity to anonymously write down a question or topic.

“Other girls don’t know who asked the question,” Grandison said. “They’re seen, heard, and not judged.”

This year the young ladies dressed in black gowns purchased by sponsors.

The participants also made vision boards, painted on canvases, and were served a formal dinner.

Although the event was created for teenage girls in Gadsden County, teenage girls from other counties are welcomed.

Grandison said since its inception, “It’s A Girl Thing” has flourished. What began with just 12 girls has now grown to include 18 enthusiastic participants. The event’s core objective is to provide motivation and inspiration to ensure that every young girl knows she is seen and heard, no matter her background or struggles.

During the event, the young ladies had the privilege of hearing from inspirational guest speakers, including Keyondio Lee, Chattahoochee Elementary School Principal Camry Floyd, and Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office Captain Anglie Holmes. The event’s mission is to address critical issues such as self-esteem, bullying, depression, anxiety, abuse, and more, offering a platform for these young girls to find solace and inspiration. Grandison herself has experienced the challenges faced by young girls and shared, “I too have been a young lady bullied before. I felt there was no one to listen to me.”

To address these issues, the girls engage in “Table Talk” sessions, where they openly discuss their concerns, knowing they are in a safe and judgment-free space. On arrival at the event, participants are given the opportunity to anonymously write down questions or topics that weigh on their minds.

As Grandison puts it, “Other girls don’t know who asked the question. They’re seen, heard, and not judged.” This year, the young ladies adorned themselves in elegant black gowns generously provided by sponsors. In addition to the powerful discussions, the participants had the chance to create vision boards, express themselves on canvases, and enjoy a formal dinner.

Despite its roots in Gadsden County, “It’s A Girl Thing” warmly welcomes teenage girls from neighboring counties, ensuring that support and inspiration are accessible to as many young ladies as possible.
