Grammy Award winner has Havana ties – Multi-Grammy nominated songwriter/producer wins 2023 Best Song for Beyoncé’s ‘Cuff It.’

Grammy Award winner Denisia “Blu June” Andrews was born in Fort Lauderdale but spent her early years in Havana.

The family returned to their native town in 1993 where she attended Havana Elementary for a brief period. Andrews spent her remaining school years in Tallahassee.

Currently residing in Los Angeles, Andrews is quickly progressing in the music industry. The songwriter/producer is one half of the 8x Grammy nominated songwriting/ production team Nova Wav, along with her business partner Brittany “Chi” Coney.

Andrews said Nova Wav is the first female songwriter/producer duo in the music industry.

“She’s overexcited,” said Shirley Bryant, Director of Events for the Havana Community Development Center, describing Andrew’s recent reactions.

Considered a double threat because of her musical inclination and athletic ability, Andrews was best known around the city of Tallahassee for her basketball skills.

The 2003 Amos P. Godby High-school graduate received a full athletic scholarship to Central Florida Community College.

After graduating from the University of North Florida with a degree in sports management, armed with her love for music, the aspiring artist moved to Atlanta in 2011 to follow her dreams.

“I was hesitant when she relocated to Atlanta,”said Montrail Harris, Andrews’ friend of more than 30 years. “She was always creative in her own way.”

Harris often reflects on how the two, growing up, would sing in the church choirs, weddings and perform at a number of churches including St. Luke Primitive Baptist where Andrews grandfather, Moses Harrison once pastored.

Alongside Coney, Andrews placed her first industry hit, Rihanna featuring Future “Loveeeeee Song.”

After relocating to Los. Angeles in 2016 and signing to Warner Chappell her career began to blossom exceptionally.

“The energy has been Amazing,” Andrews’ mother May Andrews said. “We’re in awe to see how far she has come in her music career. We’ve supported her since the very beginning through the highs and lows,” her mother continued.

This year, Nova Wav won a Grammy for Best R&B for Beyoncé’s viral hit song “Cuff it.”

They duo was also nominated for album of the Year for Beyoncé’s, “Renaissance” album.

The singer/songwriter has received overwhelming support from her parents’ native town, Havana.

“To take in this moment means everything to be recognized by the very place that helped to cultivate my talent,” Denisia said. “The spirit and culture of Havana is so rich. Its DNA is woven in every part of who I am.”

There’s a multitude of talent that Andrews has produced, and or written for including Beyoncé and Jay Z, Mary J. Bilge, Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Teyana Taylor.

“This is just the beginning for her,” Andrews’ uncle Dale Harrison. “Dee’s entire family is gifted - her dad, mother, sister and brother were always musically inclined.”

Havana native LaRhonda Chambers, Andrews’ childhood friend, said Andrews deserves it all. “I’ll always be her biggest supporter,” LaRhonda Chambers said.
