Arrest made in connection to 4-year-old’s death

The Quincy Police Department has arrested a woman in connection with the death of a four-year-old girl.

According to a press release from the department, the following occurred:

On January 12, the Quincy Police Department responded to Arbor Crest Apartments, located at 64 North Cleveland Street in reference to an unresponsive child.

Upon officers arrival, the child had already been transported to a local emergency room by car, where she was pronounced dead.

The child was identified as A’yonna Price.

An autopsy was completed by the medical examiner’s office, while investigators and Florida Department of Law Enforcement processed the scene and followed up with the child’s medical providers.

Court documents reveal on January 13, the medical examiner discovered Price had froth on her lungs that could be associated with pneumonia or opioids.

According to the probable cause affidavit, samples were sent to the lab for a toxicology report.

The document also states that the medical examiner ruled the cause of death as complications of sickle cell anemia and manner of death as natural.

Upon reviewing Price’s medical records, investigators discovered University of Florida Pediatric Hematology prescribed medication for Price’s condition in 2018 and 2019 but the child’s mother Shainitra Anthony never picked them up, the document says.

The affidavit cites a University of Florida death review report, which states Anthony failed to seek timely medical care, and it says if Price was taken to a medical facility, it is likely that her death could have been prevented.

Investigators were able to establish probable cause for the arrest of Anthony, who was charged with aggravated manslaughter.

Anthony was arrested at her residence on Friday, July 21, 2023.

At the time of her arrest, Anthony was in possession of cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

She was booked into the Gadsden County Jail, and was released on the following day after posting a $22,000 bond.
