Four centuries of female artists to be explored at Gadsden Arts

Three new exhibitions are set to open at the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum on October 9 as part of the museum’s Celebration of Women Artists.

The first, Women Artists: Four Centuries of Creativity, organized by the Reading Public Museum, will showcase works of art by some of the most important women artists of the last four centuries.

The other two exhibitions will feature works by renowned contemporary artist Senga Nengudi and Orlando artist Renee Lewis.

Four Centuries of Creativity features dozens of historical works by highly acclaimed artists including Rosa Bonheur, Sonia Delaunay, Joan Mitchell, Louise Nevelson, Francoise Gilot, Clara Skinner, and Lorna Simpson.

It chronicles the emergence of women artists as professionals in their field, and celebrates their extraordinary creative contributions to the history of art.

Join the Educator of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Ashley W. Harris, and Gadsden Arts Curator, Angie Barry, for an Art Talk Live! on October 28 at 5:30 p.m., where they’ll discuss the artists featured in Women Artists: Four Centuries of Creativity, and explore how they fought for their place in the art world.

Also opening on October 9, Senga Nengudi’s multipart installation sculpture, A.C.Q. (Air Conditioning Queen), will be on display in the Sarah K. Newberry Gallery, on loan from the collection of Art Bridges.

Violet Oakley (American, 1874 – 1961), For the Preservation of Italy, Guardian of the World’s Most Precious Heritage of Beauty , 1918, ink on paper, Gift, Captain Roswell C. Williams Jr. Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania.

Senga Nengudi was a leading force in the African American avant-garde art scene in Los Angeles in the 1970s, and is best known for her abstract sculptures that use found objects.

Constructed out of refrigerator parts and second-hand pantyhose, A.C.Q. explores themes of gender and female resilience.

A display of Renee Lewis’s colorful mixed media works about the nature of women will round out Gadsden Arts’ newest offerings for the Celebration of Women Artists.

Lewis’s Post-Impressionist style drawings use oil crayons, colored pencils, and pastels to capture women who are empowered and strong, yet vulnerable. Her works can be viewed in the Zoe Golloway Gallery.

Gadsden Arts is offering a series of programs by guest scholars and curators to accompany these exhibitions, including a Virtual Florida Artists Happy Hour on November 9, and a discussion led by Dr. Peggy Macdonald on November 18 about the life and legacy of Marjorie Harris Carr, presented by Florida Humanities.

Gadsden Arts is located in Quincy.

It is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m.

Admission is free for members and children ages 17 and under, $5 for nonmember adults, and $3 for adult students.

Reservations are not needed to visit; however, face coverings are required.

A free admission day is offered the first Saturday of every month, and the ArtZone Family Studio is open for drop-in, art-making fun every Saturday.
