Easter For Cats Judy Conlin

For the first time in a long time, I spent Easter all alone. Usually, I have at least one guest, but this year no such luck. Well, I am never alone, because I have my family with me which consists of those two loving, but mischievous cats named Beebe and Momau. These cats do not keep calendars, so they have no idea when Easter is. This bodes well for me because they won’t be expecting anything special. I decide I can throw a wonderful Easter party for them, which will be a real surprise for them.

I think back to when my kids were little. It was a ritual that always before Easter, they had to have new outfits and new shoes. This either involved shopping trips or when money was tight, I often made matching outfits for me, my son, and his sister. What could I do along those lines for my cats. New outfits were out. Beebe always wore his black tuxedo and Momau wore a ginger colored outfit. They would have to be skinned to change these outfits, and I certainly wasn’t going to do. Neither wore shoes. The pads on their soles came as standard equipment when they arrived, and none of my cats have ever had them replaced, although I suppose there could be horrific circumstances like housefires etc., where this could happen.

I thought about getting them collars. They hate collars and spend all available time trying to get them off. Should you convince them they must wear them you find them unsafe. Those collars can get caught on something and your poor cat can strangle to death I refuse to strangle my cats..

I think about buying them some actual feline clothes at a cat boutique, but they are just as adamant about hating these as they are about collars and they also can be unsafe. I wonder about this reaction on Beebe’s part because he allowed himself to be dressed up for every occasion as a kitten. When he grew up, he suddenly put his 4 feet down and refused to put on any garment no matter how cute. This ended my interest in new clothes for the cats for Easter.

I now decided to concentrate on the coloring of eggs- something I both dreaded and enjoyed when my kids were little. My kids were inept and often made quite a mess. The cats were more than inept. Without opposable thumbs they were unable to handle the dipping wands. They did like dipping their paws in the water baths and we had colored water on everything. I had to dismiss this idea, also.

I then decided to fill Easter baskets for them. I found some tiny baskets I had made as a project at Easter one year (I won’t tell you about my problems making these miniature baskets with lace and bows glued on them. That story will be when I talk about having a nervous breakdown,) Once I set two little baskets out, I worried about what I should fill them with. A hard-boiled egg filled the whole basket, and they didn’t eat eggs anyhow. I had gotten a huge quantity of cand for Easter. There were chocolate bunnies, licorice swirls, chocolate covered marshmallow eggs, peeps. ginger chews, jellybeans (both spicy and fruity), hard caramels, York peppermints, colored M&Ms, and wintergreen lifesavers. They sniffed at the assortment as I tried to figure out what appealed to them. The answer was that not one single type of candy appealed to them.

Nurse Judy waltzed by wearing a new Easter bonnet. “Why so glum, Chum?” she addressed me.

“I don’t know what to get the cats for Easter,” I said sadly

“Put some cat treats in those baskets,” she said

“They have bowls of treats set out for them every day, “That wouldn’t be special,” I say.

“Hide them in the yard so they have to hunt for them. It would be a cat treat Easter hunt.”

“Why would they do that when they can just go in the kitchen and get as much as they want?” I ask disdainfully.

“Don’t get ugly with me,” she said.

“I’ve been trying to help. The answer is the smell of ham coming out of your kitchen. Those cats love ham. Make them each a little bowl of ham on Easter Sunday and they’ll be in cat heaven.”

I did that. They loved it and were basking on my bed with fat tummies purring contentedly all afternoon.

And where was Nurse Judy? She was basking on the couch with her fat tummy watching movies with what was left of the Easter cand in the big basket beside her.

It turned out to be a happy Easter for all.
