A changing alliance? Judy Conlin

It has long been established that Beebe is a Mama’s boy. He follows me everywhere. He believes my lap should be his exclusively and runs back and forth whining if Momau should think she is entitled to a turn on that prestigious lap. Beebe curls up on my shoes, slippers, socks or purse whenever they are left on the floor (which, I’m sorry to say, is quite often). When I pet him, or for that matter even talk to him, his purring is loud and possessive. Yes, Beebe has always been a real Mama’s boy. Now that the Christmas season has arrived, it seems to me that Beebe is acting a little differently. Let me explain. I am constantly listening to Christmas music on T.V. and as usual (even though my knees are bad and I can hardly walk) I dance around the living room doing my best to have fun without falling and breaking my neck. Both cats have always loved this dance fest, racing around jumping and twirling and having a great time. They are much more agile than I am but we all always had a good time. This year has been different. I know my dancing is now more like a shuffle, but I’m still joyful. Momau will make a few attempts to join in, but I am a little slow for her these days. Beebe, who was always the most eager participant, totally ignores me unless a picture of Santa comes on. If so, that fat cat twists himself in some crazy dance position that looks like a pirouette. As soon as Santa disappears, so does Beebe. What is going on? Both cats still follow me every time I go into the kitchen, hoping that my purpose is to leave some delicious morsel in their dishes, but shoes, socks and purses left lying around remain uncovered by furry cat bodies. Momau is the only one now seeking solace on my lap. Beebe ignores me except for kitchen runs. I have also complained to you how this big guy always interferes when I am trying to write my columns. He must be on my lap and often needs to push a few keys himself to correct my writing although I can never figure out what he is trying to say. Apparently, cat language and spelling is totally different from English. Lately, this has also changed. I can sit at the computer and type for hours without that assistant columnist trying to do his edits. I find this change helpful but puzzling. He has not completely abandoned me. He is in the same room I am, just not physically attached. He is on the guest bed next to my computer, or on the floor next to the bed. There is one thing I haven’t told you. When I decorate for Christmas, no room or space is left out, even if they only get a small dose of Christmas. This guest/computer room is no exception. Each year I set a pair of Santa boots on the floor by the big four-poster bed. I hang Santa’s hat on a bedpost and lay his cloak across the foot of the bed. Beebe will be curled up on those boots or on that cloak rather on my things all the time. What is going on? Has Beebe switched allegiance from Mom to Santa except for food? I am crushed. I have spent thirteen years taking care of and loving this guy 365 days a year. Santa only comes once a year. Don’t I deserve a little more loyalty than Santa? Sure, Santa brings him lots of toys and treats, but Santa couldn’t do that without my help. I am sad for a few days until I think back to my own childhood. At Christmastime, I was very good. I wanted Santa to love me because he brought me lots of toys and treats each Christmas. When I got older, I realized Santa couldn’t have done all this without my parents’ help. I relax. This is just a phase. After Christmas, he will be my same old loveable Beebe Baloo. I am happy. He will realize my part in helping Santa when he matures. All is well.
