Quincy Music Theatre closes season with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Quincy Music Theatre is closing out its 40th season with a classic comedy full of fun and charm. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is based on the 1988 MGM movie starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine. The story takes place in the French Riviera and follows two sneaky men—Lawrence Jameson (played by Ken Lambert) and Freddy Benson (played by Jake Tottle)—who are trying to outsmart each other. Their goal? To trick a wealthy woman, Christine Colgate (played by Grace Casey), out of $50,000. Along the way, their wild and silly plans lead to plenty of laughs. Other characters include Lawrence’s assistant Andre Thibault (Dakota Miller), Muriel (Colleen McClure), and Jolene (Ashleigh Littlefield). The musical is full of crazy moments, fun songs, and unexpected twists that will keep the audience entertained. The show was written by Jeffrey Lane with music and lyrics by David Yazbek. The original Broadway production was directed by Jack O’Brien and is licensed by Music Theatre International. Quincy’s version is directed by QMT Board President Kafui Ablordeppy, with choreography by Taylor Whittle and music direction by Scott Leaman. It features 16 actors and a backstage team of 33 people, including a live orchestra. The show runs for about two hours and includes an intermission. Ken Lambert, who plays Lawrence, said, “He finds himself tempted to go against his own philosophy.” He described Lawrence as a clever conman who’s been doing this for years, even working with local law officials. “That everything runs so effortlessly smooth makes Lawrence add a bit of fun to the game by adopting Freddy as a protégé,” Lambert said. Lambert, who works in IT and is also a nurse, said he has always loved the film and that the musical numbers made him excited to audition. “They’re really fun, vary in style, and really allow us leads to showcase our voices.” Jake Tottle, who plays Freddy, called the role a dream come true. “Freddy is a bombastic young man who makes up for his lack of grace with his vulgarity. He is a man who has been on his own since he was a teenager just grifting, stealing, and building up walls around himself,” Tottle said. He said Freddy and Lawrence are total opposites, and that their bond is a big part of the story. “They both love the thrill of the game, and we must root for Freddy, wanting him to con these innocent people, but we must also realize what he is doing is morally wrong, which has its own humor in it as well.” He added that the show is a great way to relax and forget about real life for a while. Grace Casey, who plays Christine Colgate, shared her excitement about the show: “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a show I have loved for years. The story is fast-paced and interesting, with a truly stellar score that brings new energy to the plot.” Grace has played Christine before—11 years ago in her high school theater program. “I’m thrilled to be bringing this kooky, lovable and complex character to life once again.” She said Christine’s kind and honest nature changes the game for both Lawrence and Freddy. “Give me what I want,” she says, describing how Christine is different from the people the two men usually try to scam. Grace has been performing since she was eight and studied vocal performance at Florida State University. She now works in an office and says acting brings a fun break. “I am so glad to be in this space, after such a long break. Come see this show!” Director Kafui Ablordeppy called the show a joyful challenge. “From the moment I was selected for this show, I knew we were in for a wild and hilarious ride,” said Director Ablordeppy. “This musical is fast-paced, full of charm, and packed with enough twists and turns to keep everyone on their toes—from the cast and crew to the audience in their seats.” He thanked both the creative and production teams for helping bring the show to life. “It’s been an honor to bring this story to the Quincy Music Theatre stage. Enjoy the con, and remember: it’s all in good fun—unless you’re the mark.”
