Munroe Bobcats defeat Poplar Springs

After three tough losses in a row for the start of their season, the Robert F. Munroe varsity baseball team claimed a wild and hard fought 25-11 victory over the Poplar Springs Atomics on Friday, March 4.

The Bobcats loaded the bases quickly in the top of the first inning, and second baseman Josh Briggs (#4) scored the first run of the evening after right fielder Charleston Mosely (#13) was hit by a pitch.

The Atomics offense responded in the bottom of the first by scoring three runs off an RBI single, a double, and a passed ball.

Munroe center fielder Leith Kenon (#3) drew a walk early in the second inning, advanced to second base on an error by the Atomics third baseman, and scored on the next play, an RBI single by Briggs.

Starting pitcher Harrison Sadberry (#2) then drove in Briggs with another single, making it a 3-3 game.

Sadberry then struck out three batters in the bottom of the inning, allowing one walk.

The Atomics went to the bullpen in the top of the third frame.

The relief pitcher walked three batters, and then Sadberry cleared the bases with a three run double.

The Atomics were far from done, however, and the first three batters in the bottom of the third also drew walks to load the bases.

A hit batter, an RBI single and a three run triple gave Poplar Springs an 8-6 lead.

The Bobcats came right back in the fourth inning. Mosely hit a single, stole second, and catcher Uriel Carrillo, Jr. drove Mosely home with a double.

Third baseman Jon Daniel Gay (#11) then pulled off a sacrifice bunt, advancing Carrillo, Jr. to third base.

Kenon then drove Carrillo, Jr. home to tie the score, 8-8.

Manuel Monroy (#12) came in to relieve Sadberry in the bottom of the fourth.

One runner scored, giving the Atomics the lead once again.

Sadberry hit a triple to open the fifth inning, and the Bobcats once again took the lead, scoring four runs.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Atomics scored a single run off a passed ball.

The Bobcats offense went into overdrive in the top of the sixth, scoring 12 runs off nine walks, one passed ball and five singles.

The Atomics went down fighting, scoring one final run on a passed ball before the last out was recorded.

Sadberry led the Munroe offense, going 5-for-6 at the plate with three singles, a double and a triple.

He scored twice and drove in five runs.

Every Bobcat in the lineup scored at least once in the game.

“Everybody contributed Friday night,” said Bobcats head coach Jeremy Barlow. “It was exciting for me to see us compete as a whole team and face adversity to come out on top.”
