A gift for every child this Christmas – Quincy church gives away toys to local families

For around 20 years, the congregation at New Birth Non-Denominational Church has worked to make Christmas a little more cheery for children from struggling families in Gadsden County with an annual toy giveaway.

This year, on Saturday morning, December 17, church members set up three large tables in front of the church loaded with wrapped gifts, sorted by age and gender.

Beginning at 10 a.m., families wishing to benefit arrived with their children, who were each presented with a new toy.

The first family to arrive, for example, received a doll for the youngest, a set of two toy monster trucks for the middle child, and a scooter for the eldest child.

“We are really trying to reach out to all of our community in Gadsden County, everyone.” said Pastor Eddie Richardson. “Especially those in need. The parents may be out of a job, so they can’t get their kids a gift for Christmas. We want to make sure that every child has a gift for Christmas.”

Pastor Richardson explained that most of the gifts were donated by members of the New Birth congregation, with gifts being given throughout the year.

“As we get toward the end of the year,” explained Richardson, “Members begin to give a little bit more, people from the community give, sometimes companies like WalMart come in and help us out. But it’s really up to us, as believers, as Christians, to reach out to the community and see what we can do. Sometimes we have to go in our own pockets, and show the love and appreciation for our community. We care about our community, we care about our children. It helps for us to show it, and not just talk about it.”

Richardson also explained that the church tries to hold community outreach events like this one throughout the year, not just during the holiday season.

“We try to do something in our community every three months or six months. We’ve been doing things like this for 25 years, and we are looking even further, around March, to doing some other things. We want to come outside of the church walls, into the community. This is where we should be.”
