Fire department around Gadsden County host Fire Prevention Week events

This year, Fire Prevention Week is taking place on October 9-15, and several local firefighting agencies will be hosting events to raise awareness on fire safety, and to promote better safety practices in Gadsden County.

The Quincy Fire Department will be celebrating Fire Prevention Week at Ward’s Lot, located behind the firehouse at the corner of North Ward Street and West Washington Street.

Quincy’s firefighters will be giving out free hotdog dinners from 5-8 p.m. as they talk about fire protection and fire safety practices that everyone can implement in their own homes.

Joining the Quincy Fire Department will be the Quincy Police Department, the local Division of Forestry, EMTs with Gadsden County EMS, the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office, and the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office.

In Gretna, the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department will be protecting the safety of its citizens by providing and installing free smoke detectors in the homes of city residents.

“Working smoke alarms are vital to the continued safety of our residents. The Gretna Fire Department encourages each home to have at least two alarms. Best practice is to have one in each sleeping area and hallways,” said Gretna Fire Chief Daniel Hunter. “That’s why the city is providing these detectors and our firefighters are willing to install these if needed”.

Smoke detectors can mean the difference between life and death in a home fire; three out of five deaths that occured in home fires were in homes that had no working smoke alarms.

Dead batteries are the cause of one quarter of the smoke alarm failures.

If you are a Gretna resident who needs a new smoke detector (or a few new detectors) in your home, the Gretna Fire Department’s volunteers will be giving away two smoke detectors per home.

Firefighters will be giving away detectors on Saturday, October 8 from 9-11 a.m. at the firehouse, located at 120 Beech Avenue in Gretna.

Residents who need assistance with the installation of their smoke detectors are asked to call Chief Hunter at (850) 693-9447 or Captain Parramore at (850) 510-0584.

Gretna firefighters will arrange a time to come install your detectors.

In Mount Pleasant, the volunteer firefighters will be hosting their annual open house.

To celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week, the Mount Pleasant volunteers will be working towards educating locals about simple, but important, steps they can take to keep themselves and others safe during or before a home fire.

“It’s important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different,” said Assistant Fire Chief Clay Fallis. “Have a plan for everyone in the home. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Make sure that someone will help them!”

In order to bring awareness to fire prevention, the Mount Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department will be posting tips throughout Fire Prevention Week on the fire department’s social media pages.

The department will also be holding its annual open house at the fire station, located at 2875 Mount Pleasant Road, Quincy, on Saturday, October 15.

This will be the third year that the Mount Pleasant agency has opened up its fire department to the public, showcasing the work that firefighters do, how the community can keep itself safe, and offering an opportunity for local kids to meet firefighters and explore the station.

The open house will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and is free for all members of the public.
