Winshape For The Win

Last week marked the sixth annual WinShape Camp hosted in Gadsden County at the First Baptist Church of Quincy; it would’ve been the seventh, but due to COVID-19 it had been previously postponed.

For five days, children who have completed kindergarten through eighth grade participate in all sorts of activities brought by the camp director and volunteers.

The Chick-fil-A Winshape camp focuses on two things: bringing a diverse group of children together to enjoy days filled with fun activities and faith based lessons, and crafting young minds into becoming winners and keeping them in shape.

At camp, children can pick three different skills to work on each day such as arts and crafts, physical activities, and even life skills.

Children were able to choose from yard games, soccer, dance, cheerleading, flag football, basketball, junior chef and master chef, painting, crafts, science, and archery.

They also get an additional skill to work on every day.

One of the many activities children can take part in is also Bible study time and worshiping through songs.

Campers are separated by school grade into four different teams.

These teams compete in stage games to win tokens during activities called power up and wake up, tokens are also given for completing nightly reviews with their families.

Four of the five days of camp are exclusively dedicated to the children, with the only exception being the last day.

During the last day, the day is shortened from 7:45 a.m. - 5 p.m. to only 7:45 a.m. - noon to allow

parents to come out and enjoy the day with their campers.

For the final day, campers compete in the final triangulation showdown where two of the four teams come out victorious.

The different teams each present their own unique cheer before the game begins.

This year’s winning team for the best cheer was the Ocean Team composed of kindergarteners and first graders.

After the teams chant their anthems and a winner is pronounced, the fun begins.

The final triangulation showdown is a game of matching cards.

Throughout the ground were spread number cards of different colors. It was the team’s job to collectively find matching cards and take them back to their leader, if the cards match they are given a popsicle stick that counts as a point.

At the end, the team with the most popsicle sticks wins the competition.

In this case, there was a tie between the Galaxy team and the Alpine team.

Their mascots, a purple Barney the dinosaur representing the Galaxy team and the green Hulk representing the Alpine team, went into a friendly pool noodle fight to declare an ultimate winner.

The winner of this year’s triangulation was the Alpine team composed of fourth to fifth graders.

After a day filled with fun and one final performance for the parents to enjoy, children and their families are given lunch provided by Chick-fil-A.

With an enthusiastic smile and fun stories to tell their parents, the happy campers head home eagerly awaiting for next year’s Winshape Camp.
