Focusing on women artists, Floridian artists, and centuries of creativity during virtual Gadsden Arts events

In the upcoming weeks, the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum will be hosting a series of live, virtual programs about women artists, including an Art Talk Live about important artists in the museum’s newest major exhibition, Women Artists: Four Centuries of Creativity.

There will also be a Happy Hour for a showcase of Florida artists, featuring Florida women artists; and a presentation about Marjorie Harris Carr and Florida artist Beth Appleton, defenders of Florida’s environment.

These programs accompany the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum’s Celebration of Women Artists - five exhibitions presenting four hundred years of women artists, which will remain on view at the arts center and museum through December 18.

National Museum of Women in the Arts Educator Ashley W. Harris will join Gadsden Arts Curator Angie Barry for an Art Talk Live on October 28 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the women artists highlighted in Gadsden Arts’ featured exhibition, Women Artists: Four Centuries of Creativity (organized by the Reading Public Museum), and artists from the National Museum of Women in the Arts collection.

Dr. Peggy Macdonald will be one of the speakers in a series of upcoming virtual events hosted by the Gadsden Arts Center. Macdonald is a public historian and adjunct professor at Stetson University and Indian River State College and a native Floridian.

The discussion will examine the barriers women artists have experienced across history - and how artists such as Rosa Bonheur, Käthe Kollwitz, Élisabeth Louise Vigée-LeBrun, Françoise Gilot, Joan Mitchell, Adrian Piper, and many more, fought for their place in the art world.

On November 9 at 5:30 p.m., join experts from National Museum of Women in the Arts for a virtual happy hour to learn more about the Florida women artists who have works featured in the Gadsden Arts Permanent Collection.

During this November happy hour, share artworks and stories, and make a specialty cocktail in honor of the artists’ work, while taking a deeper look at women artists such as Beth Appleton, Alyne Harris, Marisa Tellería-Díez, Mildred Thompson, and Ruby C. Williams.

This event is free for Gadsden Arts Center & Museum and National Museum of Women in the Arts members.

The last program in the series, presented by Florida Humanities, will feature Dr. Peggy Macdonald on November 18 at 1 p.m., as she leads a conversation about the life and legacy of Marjorie Harris Carr, who tirelessly led a coalition of citizen activists for 35 years in the battle to protect and restore the Ocklawaha River.

Macdonald will discuss Carr’s life as a self-described “housewife from Micanopy,” who in reality struggled to balance career and family with her husband, Archie Carr, a pioneering conservation biologist.

Also featured will be Beth Appleton, who addresses environmental concerns through her art; several of Appleton’s pieces are currently on display at Gadsden Arts.

Gadsden Arts and the Fletcher Museum Shop, both located in Quincy, are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and the youth ArtZone drop-in studio is open Saturdays (same time range).

Admission is free for members and children aged 17 and under, $5 for nonmember adults, and $3 for adult students, with free admission for everyone the first Saturday of every month.

Face coverings are required for all in-person visitors.
