CAT TALES Cats have a problem

The cats were happy all through Easter. They loved the good smells coming from the kitchen. They were pleased that we weren’t having a big crowd which always leaves them a little frightened. They liked having only guest, even though Nurse Judy my alter ego, was sad that she didn’t have a crowd. It was a perfect day for them. They got plenty of scraps and rolled around with fat tummies pleased with themselves. Today I sat down to write about.the holiday, and Beebe climbed on my lap as he usually does to see what I write and to help with a paw on the keys from time to time. As I was writing Nurse Judy’s Nook for the Herald today, he suddenly swatted the keys and jumped off my lap. It looked like he hightailed it to Momau and whispered something in her ear. It all was baffling me, but I had a job to do and tried to ignore them. There was no denying something was wrong. They would not come to me for petting. They would not sleep on my shoes. They would not eat their canned food even though I went out and bought their expensive favorites. They would rip up old copies of the Herald and cover their food bowls with the shreds. They would not play with their toys, sleep with me, or watch TV with me. They spent their time on the screened porch giving me a swat or a hiss if I should invade their territory. Nurse Judy has declared herself a cat whisperer(which no one knows if it is true or not) and I have gone to her in the past when I could not understand what was happening with the cats. I hate doing this because it really feeds her already overblown ego and she lords it over me. Therefore, I am determined to figure it out myself. I spend the next few days being nice to the unsociable felines. I try to brush Beebe, which he usually loves and demands daily. He runs away. I get his fishing pole to play, and he crawls under the couch. Momau reacts similarly. She no longer rolls on the floor at my feet to be petted. She bit my toe when I tried to pet her today. She has always kept more to herself than Beebe but now I don’t see her for hours at a time. All this begins to wear on me. When you are a tad bit older than almost everyone, and live alone except for your cats, it is hard to be ostracized by your only companions. I am tired of being nice all the time. I’m tired of being conciliatory. After all, I’ve done absolutely nothing to justify their actions. I’m tired of making excuses for their behavior. Maybe they’re just mean cats. I am getting very grumpy. As I grumble along, Nurse Judy suddenly appears. “”Having trouble with the cats?” she asks knowingly. “Not really,” I lie. “I thought maybe you needed a little help from me,” she says slyly. “Of course I don’t,” I say. “I am perfectly capable of handling my own cats myself. “ I’m proud of myself... I don’t need to crawl to her for help. “Okay,” she says walking away. I panic. “Wait, “ I cry. “Maybe I could use a tiny bit of help. These cats seem angry at me about something.” “I’ll talk to them,” she says smirking at me. Off she goes and when she returns, she is pleased as punch with herself. I have no pride left. “Tell me what I’ve done,” I say. I miss my cats”. “You went online and said you didn’t know what to do with all the ham you had left. You have 2 cats who love ham. Yet, every time you open the fridge, they peek in and there is no ham You must have given it away and that makes them furious. I start laughing. “Is that it? I put that ham in the freezer because my cats ate quite a bit on Easter day. They already are a bit pudgy, and I didn’t want to make them sick. I’ll get them some right now.” The cold war was over. Two perfectly happy purring cats were rubbing on my ankles and looking at me adoringly as I put some ham in the microwave to thaw. Sometimes, as a cat mother, it’s okay to stop worrying about their health so much and think a little more about their feelings. I’m not sure their Dr. would agree, but then he doesn’t live with them.
