Honoring unsung sheroes: Gloria Leverson’s journey of service and strength

As Women’s History Month continues, Bear Creek Bethel Missionary Baptist Church proudly recognizes women who have blazed trails in their communities. While history often celebrates women in high-profile positions, Pastor Terrence Milton felt it was equally important to honor one of our own unsung sheroes—Sister Gloria Leverson. Sister Leverson’s story is one of integrity, courage, and purpose. She was a devoted member of Agape Christian Fellowship Center for 16 years before joining Bear Creek Bethel two years ago. Every morning, she begins her day with a prayer of thanksgiving, guidance, and protection, a testament to the strong faith that anchors her life. A leader in the fast-paced restaurant industry, Gloria has earned recognition for her outstanding customer service, even being featured twice in the Foodie Review . She manages with excellence, knowing her customers by name and remembering the regulars’ favorite orders. Her experience spans leadership roles at Hardee’s, Taco Bell, and Whataburger, where her dedication has earned her the respect of colleagues and customers alike. Beyond her career, Gloria brings style and grace to the community. She will lend her signature flair to Bear Creek’s 2nd Annual Pretty Hats and Bowtie Event, showcasing the elegance and presence that define her spirit. A 1983 graduate of James A. Shanks High School and a classmate of Pastor Milton, Gloria’s journey took her from Quincy to Tampa before returning home. She worked in her mother’s family business, the Downtown Fruit Market, and later pursued higher education, earning her Associate’s degree from Keiser College. But perhaps what defines Gloria most is her unwavering commitment to kindness and service. She lives by the laws of the land—and by God’s Ten Commandments. She once called 911 for a stranger in distress, offering comfort until EMS arrived, embodying what it means to be a good citizen and a woman of faith. Recognizing Trailblazers in Law In addition to honoring Sister Gloria Leverson, Bear Creek also celebrates two contemporary trailblazers in law who have made history through their dedication to justice and service:

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson , the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Appointed by President Joe Biden in 2022, Justice Jackson’s journey from public defender to federal judge showcases her commitment to justice and reform. Judge Kathy L. Garner , a Quincy native, who made history in 2009 as Gadsden County's first Black female judge. She has played a crucial role in mentoring youth and working with juvenile cases to reduce repeat offenses.

As we celebrate these remarkable women, we honor their strength, perseverance, and impact—both in our community and across the nation. Women like Sister Gloria Leverson, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, and Judge Kathy L. Garner remind us that making history doesn’t always require the national spotlight. Sometimes, it happens one act of kindness, one ruling, or one heartfelt prayer at a time.
