I have discovered something new about my cats. I believe they have ESP or some kind of weather barometer tucked inside of them. I’ll tell you why.

We’ve had a lot of severe storms and possible tornado warnings of late. I was afraid I would sleep through any warnings, so I purchased a weather alarm programmed to go off if there is any severe weather in our area. The device works fine and does its job, except occasionally in the daytime. My patient always has the TV volume at maximum, and by the time I get it on mute I’ve missed the message. Nevertheless, I know something is going on and can check the weather app on my phone.

The thing is, it’s not the device that wakes me up. I can be sound asleep and suddenly I am aroused by the pounding of little furry paws flying by, knocking things over, their toenails clicking on the wooden floor. I watch as Momau dives under a hassock with a flouncy skirt.

Beebe, a little obese, isn’t noted for his speed, but he is only a few seconds behind Momau, when he dives under a chair with the same kind of flounce.

I look around fearfully. Is there a burglar in the house? The little dog is fast asleep in his tiny bed. I know he’s old, partially deaf, and partially blind, but I can’t believe he slept through this cat clatter commotion. If there is a burglar, I’m afraid Oscar wouldn’t be much help as a guard dog.

Just then the weather alarm goes off, telling me what those cats already knew. It’s a tornado warning. They say to seek shelter. I try to pull the cats out from under their safe places, but they cling on to the fabric with their claws. I try to get my patient up but he refuses to budge also. My best bet is the dog. He’s so little I can handle him. I grab him. He starts growling but I am brave. I carry him into the bathroom and dump him in the bathtub and shut the door. I yell at my patient to get up again (I certainly can’t use the carry and dump method with him.) I manage to haul Beebe out from under his chair, but he’s a squirming, defiant mess and hard to

hold. Still, I carry him and somehow get the door opened. I throw him in, and the dog pops out. I ignore him for a moment and go for Momau. She gets so far back I can’t reach her unless I get down on my knees. Now you know those knees of mine hate to stand upright, let alone be kneeled upon. After a minute I realize I can lift that hassock (although it’s heavy) and pluck Momau right up. It was a good plan but as soon as I lifted that stool, Momau ran under Beebe’s chair.

The dog thought this was a new game and began racing around barking. Momau was hissing at him from her undercover hideout. Beebe was yowling and scratching at the bathroom door, and my patient wandered out of his room wondering what was going on. Feeling hopeless, I tried to steer him towards the bathroom, knowing full well that Beebe would pop out when I opened the door.

Just then there was an announcement that the hurricane warning had been lifted. The whole household was mad at me. The animals had their own protest rally. My patient, always confused, was now questioning why he had to get up only to be told to go back to bed. I had no answers.

It took hours before I got him and his dog back into their beds. The cats were quicker to recover and were curled up in my bed, their heads propped up by my pillows. I retired to a lounge chair since my bed was taken and the last thing I wanted to do was wake anyone up. It was a bit uncomfortable, but so much better than the melee I had just been through. My house looked like the hurricane had happened right there in my living room.

I must revamp my emergency plan. What worked when just Beebe and I lived here is certainly not working now. I do have an idea. If I can get a patent on those cats who know things even before the weather alert, I may be able to rent them out when inclement weather is predicted. Those lucky renters would be saved the cost of a weather alert system.

No, that won’t work. I love those pesky rascals. I’m working on a new plan. Any ideas let me know.
